Hi,

I need some help. A leak was found in the gas mains of the
builindg where I rent. Repairs should take 3 to 4 months
during which time there will be no gas for cooking or for
using the laundry dryers. The landlord has offered everyone a
20% rent abatement and supplied everyone with portable electric ranges.

The ranges work poorly - takes for ever to get water boiling.
The discounted rent works to savings of about $8 day - less
than the cost of cheap eating out/delivery for my wife and me.
Additionally, since we have no dryers we might have to start sending out our laundry to the local laundromat.

Are the landlord arrangements reasonable ? Can I negotiatie
a better arrangement, if so, then how ?

Final background info: My lease expires in December. This
appartment is in New York City and belongs to a large university (lots of buraucracy, housing office division, etc...)

Thanks !

you are most likely screwed if this is the case. normally when you rent from a university, u don't use a standard lease agreement, and you sign away a lot of your rights. If you want to try to negotiate, you will need to do it with everyone else in the building too.

your not going to get any sympathy for that, most people in the city don't have laundry in their building.

You say that like the area around Columbia is a horrible neighborhood. I know a few people that live there and it's a fine place to live.

Harlem isn't even too bad any more, especially the parts near Columbia.

The only people you're fooling are people who have never been to NYC.

That's irrelevant considering this is factored into the rent.

lol. I did not mean it in a bad way. My reply was for the NYU
fellow. I live on the demarcation line between Morningside heights and Harlem. For the non-NYers then a little disclaimer. Harlem is vast and diverse. The area near Morningside campus is great: quiet, safe, cheap - and now
increasingly getting trendier. Don't know if all the gentrificaion is such a good thing, but there is still some
old school Harlem around - say the Apollo or Showman's (nice
local jazz club).
