More often than not, I've noticed that after you've shown strength on the flop, and your opponent checks the turn to you, you can often take it down with a CB, especially if he flopped top pair and now the turn brings an overcard. But once you let the turn go unbet, the river is difficult. You might want to bet it in a last attempt to steal, but if you don't think he'll fold, then that's useless.

Of course, with hindsight a pot sized bet on the river could have taken it down. I think I should have put opp on a small pair that didn't hit the set, though he actually turned over A6.
