Party 1/2 Hold'em (8 handed)

BB's first hand. Is this a good raising hand?

Preflop: Hero is SB with J/images/graemlins/diamond.gif, 8/images/graemlins/heart.gif.

Not really. It all depends on the BB, if hes weak/tight and either folds his BB alot or folds alot of flops then i will almots raise any 2.

If hes loose in the BB or aggresive i fold this.

Raise all day. Your hand is better vs a random hand. That, coupled with your folding equity, and ability to outplay postflop makes this an easy raise.

I don`t agree. Against some opponents it`s better to complete and bet any flop.

So whats wrong with raising PF and making a continuation bet on "any flop"

i usually don't but against a passive that will complete regardless but won't raise, i would think our hand is strong enough to play but not strong enough to be putting in that many bets.

J8o doesn't have an equity edge over a random hand (maybe like 1%). So why put in bets when we don't have to out of postion.

I think it's totally read dependent, so it's hard to say to raise it up against an unknown. I would never say never.

I disagree with those who say to NEVER complete here. Again, I think it's read-dependent, and against some players a steal works better when you just complete and bet the flop. Maybe some guys get more aggressive when they think you're trying to steal, and are more willing to play back at you after the flop.

Open-completing, planning to bet any flop, can be a great strategy against LP or sLP players.

Actually, there are a lot of players against whom I will open-complete this.

I have recently been raising here with this hand. Maybe that is too weak, J9 or JT I do for sure. But I think J8 hits alot of flops, so I like a raise here pf.

anyone else?

These guidelines sound good, @bs.

But what would be your preferred action against the unknown player ... complete or fold? I don't generally like to limp in when first to act at 1/2.

well sounds like there are some that disagree with completing, so take this for what it's worth....

i like to punish people for simply completing in the SB (even in CO and Button) here because i'll fold a lot of people if not right away, on the flop a lot of the time.

HOWEVER, people generally speaking @ 1/2 look at 2 things: the 2 cards in front of them. they're just happy to be able to see a flop cheapily and will only raise here with a strong hand. so unless i've seen some aggression preflop, i complete here because they'll call with almost any 2 cards, but won't "punish" you for simply completing.
