just kidding, i really enjoy having a dog. she's between 2-3 yrs old- collie lab mix. (named Evey)- I picked up from the pound three weeks ago, and its pretty apparent that she wasn't treated well by her last owners. She will cringe if nyone raises their hand (especially if they have paper/mail in it), will piss on the floor just a little if you yell at her loudly, and was absolutly terrified of the basement when she first got here.
She is very sweet, affectionate, hardly ever barks but has a ton of enery, comes when you call her, sits (or almost sits if she is riled up) on command- but the problem is she can't be left alone. If she is she will tear up any paper lying around/ anyhting else she can get her teeth into. She has a couple of chew toys, and i would perfer not locking her up when i am in class. Anyone had a similar problem/ ideas on how to fix it?

You should likely just treat her with a lot of love and show a lot of patience. Eventually, she may unlearn those responses of fear.

Crate training isn't mean like it seems you should look into it.

I'd try give chew toy, leave for a minute, come back, praise for playing with toy, happy to see you again. Repeat this over and over again with longer intervals.

Crating (http://www.barkbytes.com/training/crate.htm) her for a while might work, too.
