I consider to have a pretty good dvd collection, but am not sure if I have all of the "must haves", what are the titles everyone should have in their dvd collection?

B. Monkey. It stars my sweetheart Asia Argento.

I pretty much gave up on buying DVDs when I joined netflix. Still, some must haves for me are movies I like rewatching a lot, usually to fall asleep to when intoxicated. Those include movies like the Big Labowski, Swingers and Go!.

Just some favorites that are either really great, really re-watchable, great bargains, or some combination of the above:

1. Frankenstein Collection from Universal Pictures(includes original, Bride of, and a bunch of others, with GREAT commentaries!)
2. Wolfman Collection -- ditto
3. Big fat collectors edition of The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly -- GREAT extras again, and incredibly re-watchable. If you've only seen it on t.v., you haven't seen it at all.
4. Spirited Away -- wistful, beautiful, intriguing anime
5. Graveyard of the Fireflies -- hard to watch repeatedly except for the fact that it's so thunderously brilliant and humane and just damn GOOD, because it's heartbreaking
6. Heat -- one of my favorite DeNiro performances and probably my favorite shoot-outs in movies
7. Futurama -- ultimately wound up being better than the Simpsons - more sly, more subversive
8. Rear Window -- Hitchcock, the most erotic kiss in movies(Grace Kelly), incredibly fun and rewatchable.
9. The Matrix -- oh, what could have been. This first in the series stands up extremely well and is terrific fun. Easily rewatchable many times.
10. Yojimbo -- my favorite Kurosawa flick, inspired "For a Fistful of Dollars" and made both Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood stars, but was huge fun in itself. Clever and transports you into a very different world.
11. The Outer Limits -- Years 1 and 2, both sets(the original show, not the remakes). Tremendous value, and many truly great stars in one of the best shows ever to hit t.v., from back when shows actually had scripts and good actors. Lots of top notch talent that went on to become major stars, inventive themes and clever ideas.
12 & 13. Seven Samurai -- the most popular Kurosawa film, outside Japan at least. Huge fun again, innovative, and inspired The Magnificent Seven, which I also highly recommend. Both have fantastic commentaries that add enormously to the fun of already superior movies.
14. Pulp Fiction collector's edition or whatever the latest big fat version is called; super great extras, super good and super rewatchable movie

Some people just don't like Futurama, but I stand very strongly by all the others being flat out unassailably very good and well worth the money. Futurama's excellent too, but I'm aware that this is one of those things, like Monty Python, that you like or you suck -- I mean, that you like or you don't.

I have other favorites of course, and I also have a big DVD collection, but that's enough for now. If there's any genre you especially like or anything and want some more suggestions or opinions outta me, I'll supply 'em.

Why do these threads always turn into a "movies I really like" thread? There should only be a handful of must-have DVDs, and a majority of DVDs listed here are not must-have at all. The only one I can think of that absolutely every movie lover's collection should contain: Pulp Fiction.

there are so many i've bought and watched 0 or 1 times. i don't even have netflix and i manage to stay amused with cable/ondemand 99% of the time when i'm actually in a movie mood. with more ondemand stuff (especially high definition) i won't see much of a reason to own any of it.

i only buy very special cds for car listening, otherwise i just use rhapsody and stream it. if i had satellite radio in my car i doubt i'd care about owning a single cd.

I agree. I work for the cable company and have every channel and OnDemand service available. Still, there is rarely anything OnDemand that I'm interested in watching (that I haven't already seen).

I have a Netflix subscription and currently have over 250 discs in my queue. I go through about a dozen discs per month. I love it.

I'm sure I'll watch more OnDemand content when it starts being available in HD.

And I'm nearly positive I won't buy another DVD until HD/Blu Ray hits the stores.

Anyway, I watch many DVD's repeatedly, and love it. How many DVD's you should own depends obviously on how much you like movies, maybe even how much you like art. There's no real number anyone could give to anyone else on that.

Spirited Away is not only just plain great, it is very rewatchable, which argues for owning it. It's very metaphorical, moody, and lyrical. There's a heck of a lot going on visually. There are a heck of a lot of mood changes and much is suggested or left to its own discovery instead of pounded home and made obvious or flat. It's hard even to imagine getting the most out of it you could without a good number of viewings.

I /images/graemlins/heart.gif this movie. I went to a preview screeening a good 6 months before its US release, and I was scared Disney would screw it up. This was my one experience in a focus group, and it taught me that focus groups are full of idiots and recommend the wrong goddam poster.

Thankfully, the poster I liked was eventually chosen:
http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B00008O895.03.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

I worked up a surprising amount of angst over something that truly didn't affect me in the slightest. I guess that means the movie's good.

Hell yeah. The biggest temptation in the world is to say that what you like is great by definition, so I try as hard as I can to not say something like, "You're wrong" if you don't like something, and just ascribe it to different tastes and personalities, maybe even levels of development, harsh or full of crap as that sounds. But Spirited Away is good enough to make me feel absolutely forced to say that if you don't think it's a really good movie, you're just plain wrong, period.

Miyazaki has a lot of spirit. We're damn lucky to have him, and that he doesn't keep it to himself.

i think it's turning into "movies i like" rather than MUST OWN DVDs. about 90% of the movies here are worth watching, and maybe worth watching a few times, but certainly not necessary for a DVD collection.

Dumb and Dumber? Come on man, that's not a MUST own DVD...Be Cool? I loved that movie but I'm not sure I would ever watch it more than twice.

All movie threads on OOT turn into "what I like."

I'd say at most 80% here are very good, and many don't bear repeated viewings. There is some serious junk recommended here.

swede123
09-16-2005, 12:38 PM
I agree with what you're saying, generally. Of course "must have" means different things to different people. The way I looked at it was movies that I repeatedly watch again and again, not necessarily critically acclaimed master pieces. I'd imagine other people feel similarly about certain movies and that's why they listed them. Still, there are a few picks here that seem pretty much random.

Swede

Blarg
09-16-2005, 01:05 PM
Repeatedly watch again and again, I'd agree with. But if it doesn't mean more than that, it immediately becomes "my favorite stuff," which might as well just be a collection of random movies happily including total crap. I like some total crap quite a bit -- lots of cheesy horror movies, for instance -- but I didn't put Count Yorga, Vampire or The Incredible Dr. Phibes in the running for must-have's. I think you gotta pull out the big artillery for that stuff, flicks you don't have to be a cultist or stoned to love.

Any of the Universal Horror. Take your pick: The Wolfman, The Frankenstein Series, The Mummy, etc...Whichever you prefer.

The following are newer films that I feel would be great additions to any DVD Collection:

Sea of Love

This list is by no means comprehensive. Just some that came to mind. BUT, imho, the films in the first list are all must haves.

You've got to have a top Hitchcock or two, but I'd feel comfortable leaving out Rebecca.

The Unforgiven is not terribly rewatchable, to me anyway.

Star Wars 4 & 5 are so far from must haves it kind of invalidates your reliability a bit.

Ronin doesn't enhance it, nor does Master and Commander.

Overall though, there are some very solid movies here and these are good choices.

I guess you could make a case for the Indiana Jones trilogy.

You're in a tiny minority, and for good reason. This was a great movie without question. And I do mean that it's not just a matter of taste. You're simply wrong.

Roger Ebert has the first one up on his list of Great Movies. I agree. The second one is simple good fun that doesn't rise to the level of the first.

It's a fantastic movie(the first one). A huge leap up from its clumsy and cheesy arguable predecessor, IT: The Terror from Beyond Space and very different from any horror in omvies at the time, great atmosphere, great tension, fantastic look, very high quality actors who are given a little time to show personality and be human and not just advance the plot, great music score, unforgettable and startling scenes and shots, and the most awesome movie creature ever invented by far.

It's also one of the most rewatchable movies I've ever seen, which can be unusual in horror films, because, like a joke whose punchline you know, a lot of impact is lost when you know exactly what and when the scares are. Still, this thing is so tight and of such high quality throughout that its rewatchability isn't crippled even when you know every frame.
