View Full Version : Underrated 80's Movies that Don't Get Enough Respect

I'll start first with "Real Genius". Just watched it the other day, and was surprised at how the jokes were still funny, and the message still relevant. The final 5 minutes of the film, with Tears for Fears' "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" as the kids play in the popcorn and William Atherton rolls up to the house is one of those perfect blendings of song and film.

I'll throw out "Streets of Fire." A scorching Ry Cooder score, a soundtrack featuring the Blasters and songs written by Tom Petty and others, a leather-clad Willem Dafoe as the bad guy, Michael Pare (Eddie Wilson from Eddie and the Cruisers) as the good guy, Diane Lane looking sooooooooooo hot, Amy Madigan punching out Bill Paxton, and Walter Hill's seamless action movie direction, capped with a climactic fight between the two leads using sledgehammers. Look for Robert Townsend as one of the members of The Sorels.

Killer Klowns from Outer Space for kitsch category.
Less than Zero. Though maybe it already gets enough respect, but still the most prescient casting in the world. I mean, Robert Downey, Jr. as a coke addict? How did they ever get him to play it so convincingly?
