View Full Version : OT: How do you wind down after a session?

I live in the UK, so I play late at night/early morning. I'm sure many of you out there do. Therefore, after a session it's usually time for bed. However, my brain is still buzzing from all the thousands of decisions I've just made and I find it hard to sleep. Sometimes I just don't bother sleeping at all (like right now), which is obviously hazardous to your health!

Suggestions? (please keep the sarcastic replies to a minimun unless it's really funny /images/graemlins/grin.gif )

usually 2-3 cigs does the trick for me, or I play some Rome:Total War for 45 mins or so.

I run a couple miles or do a couple hundred situps, then I wake up my woman and freak her all night.

Oh whom am I kidding. In reality I wank off to my favorite Final Fantasy characters, then warm up a nice glass of milk & tuck myself in.

Wow. You just described my nightly dilemma in a nutshell. Mega... you a working man? In college? HS? Unemployed? Just curious if you share my plight.

I really think you need to give yourself at least an hour buffer between finishing up a session and bedtime. I have found that if I try to hit the sack immediately, I end up just popping out of bed after rolling around in my own self-analysis for an hour and pouring my heart out on 2p2.

For me... a good hour of SportsCenter winds me down. Pretty much an hour of anything NOT poker will aid my sleep. I have also found little success with trying to read myself to sleep with rereads HoH or SSHE, as this just gets me in the poker mood again.

If all else fails, PM me, and we can have a nightly argument to wind down /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Oh wait, different time zones, that won't work.

Its funny I was on a really great heater last night and had the same problem. I usually try to read but that doesnt help. Last night I started more games cause I had done well previously and didnt get to sleep until like 5.

In the time it took me to click "reply", this post got significantly more disturbing.

Either way, you should probably start winding down a couple hours earlier from now until the end of the month.

Going to bed after playing isn't a problem for me. I just might be that lazy though.

Usually I have one more drink, post on a board I frequent (not 2+2), rub one out, and go to bed.

After college, I worked for an investment bank for 5 years in London then New York. Contract ended so I decided to take the opportunity to "turn pro" and see how it went.

I really want to give my eyes a rest, so I prefer to avoid watching TV. Reading a book that's non-poker related is a good idea.

If that was directed my way, I've just moved back to the UK from New York so still sorting out apartment etc etc blah blah. A regular bed partner would certainly help!

m,

i find that getting a good dose of exercize helps with this sort of thing.

alternatively and less helpfully, i try to not let myself get to any sort of place where my mind would ever be buzzing. i just dont' like the level of anxiety that entails. i find that if i'm feeling like that post poker, it means i was letting myself get too worked up in general about the poker, and that i probably should have been going easier.

alternatives: mindless reading, like decent scifi/fantasy, or sportscenter, or just icewater in a good comfy chair.

This is interesting because...:

1) This question gets asked every couple of months.

2) I have to wind down before poker, not after. I'll just simply be tired afterwards. I need to be calm and relaxed before I sit down, with nothing on my mind.

I did do a quick search for similar threads but it came up blank. If you have a link to any previous discussions please let me know. Anyway, if this topic had been over-used here, I'm sure Citanul would have butchered me for it /images/graemlins/grin.gif But he didn't.

okay mega, here's what you do... if you wanna avoid hairy palms (I just shaved mine... /images/graemlins/blush.gif). A book is a definite yes, and you also need to find a kind of music/recorded sound you can lose yourself in, as in you listen instead of thinking.

online poker is perfect for my adhd mind, but then again, sleeping is not, especially when Im either thinking "what was I DOING?" or "what a heater!", so I feel your pain.

get some icewater, relax, put on something soothing (usually better with no lyrics) and relax.

oh, and something that no one else suggested yet, have a notepad next to your bed, and whatever thoughts are running through your head (different lines, yada ya...) just write it down.

Hey guys, just wanted to say thanks for keeping me entertained yesterday. Some really funny posts. Although I am running great right now and can't complain, I haven't been able to sleep. Maybe this is a by-product of winning (or losing) big that I'll have to get used to. I'm sure I'll be ok after I get the body clock in synch.

Anyway, I slept till 2pm today (woohoo!) and feel great. I wanted to give the brain a day off so I wasn't going to play. Anyway, decided to play 1 set of 4 (always risky, big variance factor). Won 2 of them and bubbled a third for a cool $285! Day over. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'm going to take Citanul's advice and read a mind-numbing, escapism book tonight and see if that works.

Goodnight all! zzzzzzzzz

DO NOT CLICK ON THE GOLF CLUBS.

Me saying not to will probably make you want to, but I did a google search for Giga and one of the golf club pics gave me a virus.

No wind-up here, I got the virus two weeks ago when looking for an amusing Giga picture for some reason or other.
I believe I even mentioned that I got a virus on the forums.
