can the mods please write a note when they lock a new poster's thread, especially their first?

Agreed. Just becasue a topic has been talked about alot before, is no reason to lock a thread. Eventually all the topics will run out and the board will die if we continue to do this.

It's not that it's been talked about it a lot, but it's such a general thread that it's impossible to give a good answer. Both of those things combined make it a lock.
