View Full Version : I want a unique pet

No cats, no dogs, no birds, probably not fish.

I'd prefer something somewhat quiet, yet entertaining with tons of bonus points if practically everyone who sees my pat has to ask what it is.

I'd like to keep the final price tag under $1000 w. cage and everything included. Any ideas?

I had an ex-gf that has 3 ferrets now. They're good pets and fun to play with

09-12-2005, 07:44 PM
Don't get a ferret. They smell horrible, even after you remove their scent glands. And they'll crap and piss in every corner of your house.

You said no birds, but I think a male and female canary would be cool. Then you could hear the male singing to the female all of the time.

Or maybe a hedgehog.

Cats, dogs, and birds are great pets because they're socialable animals. Fish are nice decorations.

You'll have to chop up dark leafy greens daily, but they are a lot of fun, very low work, beautiful, comparatively rare, and for under a g you can set them up appropriately.

I gave mine up when I downsized my herp collection in anticipation of a move---they are in a zoo now, doing alright. I just kept my boids, which are incredibly low impact---a Sumatran short-tailed python, as an adult, needs to be fed about every 21 days, and defecates every-other-month or so.

Dude, he has a better pad then me. That's a 125 gallon fish talk, flipped up-side-down onto it's base, which is about 150 gallons of space itself.

I cut-out the doors and screened them in, cut holes between the sections at various places and put in 'shelves' that make it a dual-level pad.

It's about 275+ gallons of space and he's been in there since he was about 2 inches long (he's about 16 now head to toe)

It's the only piece of furniture in my house I dred moving whenever the time comes. Crazy pain in the ass.

Bearded Dragon

"Bearded Dragons (Pogona vitticeps) are reasonably common pets as they are a manageable size, placid in temperament and as with most reptiles, once you have a vivarium set up, they are relatively easy to keep. In addition they live very well in captivity, develop real character and can be a constant source of amusement."

Whatever you get, make sure you do some research and know how to take care of it. The biggest problem with exotic pets is that the owners get something because they think it is neat but dont have a clue as to what they are getting into.

Vietnameese Pot Belly Pig. I hear they can be house broken and are quite sociable.

Otherwise I second ThinMan's bearded dragon, only with a bigger enclosure.

Ferrets are cool, and occasionally you can get lucky and get one that doesn't stink. They are usually real friendly though.

Axolotl's are cool too, they are the larval stage of Mexican Salamanders, but if kept in water they stay as these giant tadpole like things there entire life.

Along the same lines as a lizard, a nice snake makes a real easy pet. They don't stink, crap like once a month and require very little feeding. Some of them are quite friendly too, although they are just being that way because they think you are a tree.

Columbian boas are my favorite. Pythons are okay but typically take a little more care as they don't always shed/eat properly.

I second this nomination. My best friend has 3 (they are very social so you can't really just have one) and they seem to fit your requirements. If you take them out of the cage they will just climb on people and jump back and forth on people and furniture across the room. They are overall pretty cute, and fairly easy to maintain.

Negatives are that they are stinky, and the cage needs to be cleaned very often. Besides that they are nocturnal, so you kinda need to have a place to keep them that isn't lit 24 hrs.

At least look into em!

Be careful with your choice of pets. Make sure that you can
provide for the needs of your pet. Veterinary care for
exotic animals can be hard to come by and very expensive
(e.g. yearly vaccinations).

There are many things to consider.
Many animals have surprisingly long lifetimes and can become
a burden later on in your life. (eg. parrots - great pet, can be great lifelong partner). Many exotics are not fully domesticated and require socialization with other members of their same species.

Among the more usual exotics, ferrets are fun. Very playful and social. You can get one from a breeder for research center. They smell funny, but then so do dogs.
Rats are also supposibly really cool pets - amongst the smartest rodents.

Avoid monkeys.

Good luck.

Post pictures.

I dont think you should get a pet. It sounds like you want something to show off and you are concerned about cost. Pets need constant care, attention and love and the purchase cost is just the beginning. Pet maintenance and care is expensive but the unconditional love and companionship are worth every penny.

If you really want a pet and not a toy get a parrot. They are smart, very social and he will be your companion for life.

Phill S
09-13-2005, 10:57 AM
I dont understand why you dont just get a dog, but meh, horses for courses.

My housemate at uni last year bought a preying mantis - just feed it any creepy crawlies you find around the house (or buy crickets dirt cheap from the pet store you got the mantis from).

Not too sure they are hits with the ladies, but then will a snake or a big lizard?

Its a talking point and feeding time was always entertaining.

As someone else said, make sure you take good care of your pet whatever it may be - my housemate didnt keep its skin moist or something and his mantis died, arsehole.

Best pets evar:

http://www.genome.gov/Pages/News/Photos/Science/rat_image.jpg

Pros:
Very social, very funny, very intelligent, easily housebroken, cage needs to be cleaned bi-weekly (if you have only one), do not smell (clean as a cat), as cheap as it gets.

Cons: Need your daily attention for an hour if held single (well, they are social), no electrical wiring is safe if you leave them unattended in the room (TV, computer, stereo), good luck finding somebody taking care of them if you are on vacation, usually die of cancer after 2-3 years.

I have a huge new stoke on Sugargliders. Google em, think little flying squirrels but not as nasty. They're pretty playful, quiet, and don't smell awful. It's hard to find a breeder of em though, if you do the price tag is usually around 100$ for a baby (on the east coast.) Girls are obsessed with em as a bonus, but you may get the "squirrel master" zings, especially if you carry it around in your pocket.

Chinchillas would be dope if they weren't usually nasty and smell like sht. They go for about 200$.

Exotic turtles are pretty cool too but you can't really play with em or anything. Very soothing to watch though.

Ferrets smell awful to me, but some people can deal with it. They're moderatly cheap.

Also, if you can find one, descented skunks apparently make great pets.
