Need some help. I think I was tilting here. The session was not going well early. Then i get Rockets! No reads, since I really only sat down about 15 hands ago.

I'm assuming the flop check was actually a check raise? Otherwise it looks fine.

I guess I don't get the reason to check-raise here. You were the last bettor pre-flop, and the other pfr has already checked this round. You don't know where your bet is coming from and have an overpair. I think this is a definite bet out.

Yeah you have to bet the flop, this is going to get checked through most of the time.

For some reason I got spooked by the fact that I had so many players. I felt like I wanted to thin the field because the pot was so big. I guess looking back, I should have been exstatic! But I wasn't.

No sweat - I totally know the feeling. When you've been losing, seeing this many players go to the flop gives you a sense of dread. I've definitely been there. And then you start making plays like this! /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

When you're thinking protection, you need to have two thoughts:
1. What am I protecting from?
2. How can I best offer poor odds to those hands?

For 1, you obviously have to protect vs. a flush draw here. Fortunately, if a /images/graemlins/heart.gif comes on the turn, you have a redraw.

When you get to 2, though, the answer is - you can't. With a pot this big, no matter what you do, you're giving good odds.

When you realize that, you see that you just have to bet for value. You won't win the hand every time. You won't even win it a majority of the time. But you'll win much more than 20% (your share of the pot with 5 players).

In big pots you sometimes have to think about thinning the field, but this is defintitely not one of them. 1) You are giving up way too much value if this gets checked through. You just lost 4SB if it checks through. 2) If the flop gets checked through you just gave everyone a free card to draw out on you which is a DISASTER. 3) A checkraise does not even protect your hand here. *IF* someone bets to your left, the rest of the field is going to be trapped between you and him, so you're not going to knock anyone out. 4) Even if you could face someone with 2 bets, there really aren't any hands that you're worried about that are going to fold.

I'd check/call the turn and river. You're probably behind, but you have outs to counterfeit a two pair. When you bet the turn, you're pot committed to call his raise. So just check/call. You'd bet the turn only if you have reason to believe button has a draw, and few people cap draws at this level.
