Say you're down 4-0 40-0 in the 1st set. Wouldn't it be +ev to just stop trying that set and let your opponent win it? I know i would be really frustrated if i lost that 1st set 6-3 and took a 3-1 lead in the 2nd only to lose it.

I imagine this depends almost solely on who is in better shape.

This is the conclusion i've came to, though i am not sure what to do assuming both players had equal fitness.

Fitness is definitely a part of it but it would be better to use that time to try some different strategies to see how they work. Or just stand there and smash everything and its either going to be a winner or an error. Of course, coming back from being down 4-0 or 5-0 in a set is nothing new. Some people really tighten up if they jump out to a big lead because they start thinking "Okay, just one more game" and lose focus.
