What happened to this guy? Warning: sorta gross

I've seen this pic before, but it's been a while. I'm pretty sure this was a result of a boxing match(or some other style of fighting?). But, I've never known what the hell happened to him in order to get that goose egg. Anyone know the story, or can make up a good one?
