View Full Version : how to look older?

Ok here's the problem. I'm 26. I teach high school. On Mondays-Thursdays I typically wear a dress button-up shirt, and dress pants. But on Fridays, I wear 'regular' clothes, which is basically jeans and a t-shirt (solid color) of some sort. This year I'm teaching at a new school, and immediately I got a couple of comments like "Wow, I thought you were a senior when I first walked in!" and "When I saw you walking around campus and didn't know it was you, I thought you were a student!"

I got these kinds of comments at my old school, and now at my new school. Now don't get me wrong, these comments don't aggravate me or piss me off or anything, but it does make me wonder how old I have to get before I look more or less my age. What can I do to make myself look a little older?

Currently my head is very close-cut (almost shaved), and I suppose that contributes to it a bit, but other than that, I don't feel I dress inappropriately young (super baggy pants, throwback jerseys, and the like), or speak like some punk kid either. I am short (about 5'7") and I have a feeling that contributes to most of my problem. People have told me I do have a very young looking face, too.

So do you have any suggestions on what I can do?

Teachers get to wear jeans and a t-shirt? Wtf is going on? /images/graemlins/confused.gif

Well, on Fridays, more casual dress is acceptable at the school I teach at. They frown upon anything more casual than t-shirt/jeans though (i.e. no shorts/tanktops/etc.)

Pleats, higher than waist cut pants and neutral color shirts and ties

just a guess but you maybe could grow some facial hair. a beard, a goatee perhaps.

you're likely too young for a mustache.

See, I've been told that too.... and here's the problem. If when I'm 40 I look like I'm in my 20's, believe me, I'll be the happiest man on the planet. But when I'm 26 and I look 18-20ish, that really hurts me in terms of like meeting women and stuff, you know?

I'm not exactly sure, but that I think that may be frowned upon by my administrators.

Wish I had your problem.
I am 22 and look like I'm 27-30

It was cool when I was 17 and didn't get carded anywhere, but I have a similar problem with meeting women. 20-22 year old girls assume I'm some sort of creepy 30 year old.

Grow a sensible goatee. I don't mean with just the chin, but the mustache as well. Trust me, it makes me look a lot older.

You could do what I did and have thinning hair on top and a receding hair line by the time you're 25.

Ditto that. Although now I'm finding greys in my goatee so the "older" look is accelerating a bit. /images/graemlins/frown.gif My fear now is that I'll shave it and still look like an old fart.

Start drinking VERY heavily.

If that doesn't work you may have to move on to hard drugs.

The SF should be no higher than 3 for these situations.

Get a beard.

i got the same problem.

try growing a beard...?

although you could be like me and just not be a naturally hairy guy, in which case you can only get a faint line beard and a shitty one at that.

i think i've admitted too much here.

Start a meth habit. This will age your face ten years lickity split.

I've always had the same problem.. maybe when I'm 80 I'll appreciate the young face, but for now I keep a goatee. Makes a huge difference. Mid-30's and I still get carded for beer sometimes if I'm clean-shaven.

No one is too young for a moustache. Unless you mean he's too young to have the ability to grow one. I'm 22 and would totally rock a moustache if I had the ability to grow one /images/graemlins/frown.gif

Yea, I also have the same problem as you. My beard hair grows in very sporadically, and so I won't be able to get a nice 'full' looking beard/goatee. Sigh...

When you shave, don't do a really close one. Just kinda go over it lightly and you'll keep a tiny bit of stubble which will make your face a little more weathered. You won't look like an unshaven bum, but it will be just enough to notice and people will think you're older than what they do now.

They now consider not enough hair growth to be a problem, and you can get stuff from the doctor that will cause you to grow more hair. It's totally absurd, but whatever. I don't think the tradeoff is worth it, since shaving really sucks, and having the option of going four days without and not looking like a wooly mammoth is appealing.

As far as looking older, most of the people who say that it's good to look young just don't understand. When you look young, especially as a guy, you automatically receive less respect in all social situations. In many cases, it's not all that different from being a woman or a minority, but when then when you try to explain this to people, they look at you like you're some sort of jackass trying to hop on the oppression bandwagon, so you can't even get anyone to understand. Also, it's rather emasculating to be mistaken for a child or a woman. I don't know about you, but that happens to me all the time.

What your complaining about being forced to date women 6 years younger than you are?

No, I can't relate to that.

BTW, w/ older women just mention off hand how old you are. Do it in some round about or funny way, be creative. If anything it will make them remember you and that is a very good thing.
