Quote from article...

...officials braced for what could be a staggering death toll by readying 25,000 body bags.

Hopefully people can work towards making sure this doesn't happen again, at least to the extent possible. Allocating blame and creating scape goats serves to benefit nobody.

Heh, it's pretty obvious that they'd try to overshoot the amount of body bags by a good bit "just in case." If they bring 25K body bags, it basically means there is no way 25K deaths are expected.

The really sad thing... how many bodies do you think will never be recovered... i.e. washed out to see or filtered out to Mississippi by bach-wash from these broken levees.

DMORT (the Disaster Morticians group) is being told, by FEMA, to expect upwards of 40,000 for the Gulf Coast region.

It's just pretty damn sad that they were ready with body bags, but not with food, water, shelter, porta-potties...

A co-owner of Shelbyville-based Gowen-Smith Chapel has been deployed to Gulfport, Miss., to help with recovery since Hurricane Katrina, and his business partner here has described the grim task there.
"DMort is telling us to expect up to 40,000 bodies," Dan Buckner said, quoting officials with the Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team, a volunteer arm of Homeland Security.

Wow. I hope they are WAY off.

Note: I wasn't calling you a liar, I just wanted to see where you had heard that figure.

Lack of information can lead to crazy estimates. Early 9/11 estimates had casualties well over 10K.

yeah, but those came down within a day. this is nearly two weeks since it hit and the counts/estimates seem to be increasing. The actual ordering of such a large number of body bags is likely more than wild speculation.

And it is. Even if there is a 1% chance of being over 20K deaths, they'll bring at least that many bags, because if it just so happens that the number is that extreme, it's better to have the bags then get called incompetent for not having enough.
