How is the room and what limits and games does it spread ? The reason I am asking is that I am planning a trip to Vegas and want to stay in a hotel on the strip that has a poker room. On my last trip I stayed at Hard Rock which was fun, but no poker. I like the poker rooms at Mirage and Bellagio, but Luxor is so much less for the room.

One thing you might try is looking into Harrah's or Imperial Palace. It's right across the street from the Mirage and well within walking distance of the Bellagio for the same rates as what you'd pay at the Luxor.

From what I've heard, the big draw at the Luxor is the morning tourneys which I've never played in. Other than that, every time I've walked past that room it's been pretty dead. We walked through one time on our way to the 9pm Blue Man Group show on a friday night and they didn't even have 2 full tables running, and one of them was stud.

I think you'd get more value staying closer to the Mirage and Bellagio, if that's where you like to play.

The Luxor has 4-8 hold'em and 1-5 stud.

If the games aren't good at the Luxor, you can go next door to either Mandalay Bay (4-8) or Excailbur (2-6 spread limit) and play hold'em and 1-5 stud. The Monte
Carlo is a 10-12 minute walk away. "The Bellagio is a 15-20 minute walk away.

Once again, I will point out that the Monte Carlo has a very good room, cheap poker room rates, and a fantastic location on the Strip- especially for a poker player.

Another nice thing about the Monte carlo is that you can catch the tram to the Bellagio. This gives you fairly quick access to the big poker room in town.

Best wishes,
Mason

Another nice thing about the Monte carlo is that you can catch the tram to the Bellagio

When I was there a few weeks ago that tram was no longer running. We tried to catch it at the Bellagio and an attendent near where the tram used to be said they had closed it. We didn't get a real good reason why but something about a new tram that is going to run all around the strip or something.

I was at the MGM also during our stay and apparently the tram running from there to Bally's is closed as well.

So, keep that in mind...

On the 3rd day we got the info on the damn tram. Due to the construction at the bellagio it isn't gonna be running for at least a year. Also, it was initially intended to go all the way down the strip but Caesar's and the MGMMirage company got into a pissing war about it. Caesar's didn't want to pay for it but wouldn't let them build on their land unless the tram stopped there. MGMMirage wouldn't stop it there unless Caesar's helped pay and i guess the stand-off has never been resolved. Anyway, that's what the i got from the monte carlo/bellagio information desk.

I really liked the Monte Carlo room also. The floor people were very nice and helpful and it was cozy. The partial smoking was a bit annoying but few people were smoking when i was there. The no chopping thing was strange though. Its a bit of a walk from the Monte Carlo to the Bellagio/Mirage though as you have to pass the boardwalk and a couple of car rental places.

Umm... So stay in the Luxor... then:

Get on the People Mover from the Luxor to Excalibur,
Then Walk over to NYNY then to Monte Carlo.
Take Tram To Bellagio... Your there.

Or Walk over to MGM from NYNY... Take train to Bally's... walk across steet to Bellagio.

Sincerely,
AA

uh....AA haven't you read the rest of this thread. Those tram's are currently shut down. Don't make plans relying on taking these things. They weren't available as of a month or so ago when I was there and there weren't plans to open them up anytime soon. (See above message on that).

MC is a great room. I have enjoyed playing there but wasn't able to last time I was there (last month) because the room was pretty dead. It was a friday night too, very strange. They had a table of $2/4 running in the back that they said they were going to make a $4/8 but didn't, at least not in the time that it took us to go eat and come back.

Normally, I think they run a $1-4-8-8 spread with $1 and $2 blinds. They also run a $4-8 with $1-2 blinds.

Someone here was saying that they take a $4 max rake ($3 rake with $1 jackpot) but the sign there says max rake is $5. Don't know what's up with that...

Anyway, the games are usually pretty good. Lot's of old fogie rockish types in the afternoons/early evenings and fairly predicatable folks in the evenings. It's a nice little room that's pretty secluded from the rest of the casino.

Have fun!

1-5 stud, 1-4-8-8, 2-4 and 5-10 hold 'em (which seemed to break late at night each night). The first day I was there they had 3 tables going at 10 am when I woke up, the 2nd day I was on the starting roster of the 1-4-8-8 at 11:15 and there was a stud game already going.

Take the Luxor if it's a good rate, and play the $2-6 game at the Excalibur. Great, crazy game at night, straightforward during the day and a very friendly staff. Plus, a few bonuses that make playing there nice if you're looking for that limit. They also spread $1-5 stud.

Hi Sucka,
Hmmm... true I'm a bit out of touch. It's been 3 years since I was a regular on the Strip.

Geez, I heard they're going to replace the Sinking Ships show over at Treasure Island with something "more adult".

Hmmm... think that "Vegas as a family destination" thing didn't work out?

LOL!

Sorry for the bad info.

Why'd they shut them down?

Sincerely,
AA

They shut them down, apparently because they are working to make a tram that goes around the entire strip - or most of it. There are, I'm sure, some hangups as someone mentioned before although I'm not aware of anything regarding the specifics.

At any rate, like I said - don't count on relying on the tram if you are taking a trip in the near future.

The Strip appears to be undergoing a bit of a makeover to try to appeal to a hipper crowd, according to what I saw on the news last night. Aladdin is going to become the Planet Hollywood Casino, and Treasure Island is going to become the "TI".

The Monte-Carlo to Bellagio tram is shut, but it likely has more to do with the Frank Sinatra Drive project than anything else.

Seriously though, take cabs or rent a decent car from Alamo for around $24 day; it is not really worth it to transfer from one tram to another to save $10.00 maximum.

Thats a shame about the Treasure Island show if its true. Its by far the best outside show on the strip. So much better than oversized sprinklers moving to Celine Dion. Ugh.

"Sirens of TI" sounds interesting... plus, I've seen the old pirate show a dozen times anyway. I say, bring back the Spirit of Vegas!

I dont know if this is true, but I heard Treasure Island is renaming itself Crazy Horse III, and that will dictate the theme of the new show /forums/images/icons/tongue.gif

But I can't discount the whole show. I'd wait there for an hour to hear that Bocelli song on certain nights. Or some of the Copland pieces. Seriously, I think that bellagio water show is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. So peaceful.

You guys all turned me off to Luxor etc. .... I was just about to book Mirage, but my co-worker told me to look at TI. It is about $300 cheaper for the trip. I know it is right next to Mirage, should I go there ?

sucka
04-30-2003, 04:12 PM
It's close enough. There's a tram that goes from the front of the Mirage to TI regularly during the day and evening. I think it shuts down at 10 or 11pm so you'd have to hoof it over there early in the morning but it sounds like a good deal.

You could probably get a better deal at Harrah's which is right across the street and probably just as short of a walk.
