I like potato vodka better than grain, thus had been drinking Chopin. Saw this at the market, it's WAY cheaper, and the quality is excellent.

Isn't vodka, by definition, just watered-down ethanol? Why does it matter what it's made from?

Residual tastes (due to various sugars); vodka is flavoured through charcoal but these tastes remain. Potato vodkas tend be slightly sweeter.

I don't like vodka very much, but I have had a few good ones like Van Gogh Vodka. Super smooth.

During the period leading up to the Gulf War, I boycotted all French goods, switched to Stoli, and never went back.

So uhh, next time you're at the airport and you find out your plane is an Airbus, what will you do? Those damn Frenchies. Not supporting our illegal and imperialistic war. For shame!

Huh? I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Science, which includes many courses on airline safety. Taking the A320 as an example (one of the most common domestic aircraft in operation), the aircraft itself was very rarely the problem when it came to accidents. The problems stemmed from the fact that the aircraft is mostly computer controlled, and thus the pilots had problems operating it correctly. Even the first major Airbus crash in France in 1988 (at the airshow in Mulhouse) was due to pilot error. He simply did not understand an important part of the systems.

I've even personally flown a French aircraft. An Aerospatiale (now Socata) TB9 Tampico. It was the best ergonomically designed aircraft I've ever flown. Much better than what what American manufacturers put out.

I could go on and on about why you're wrong, but I'll just leave it at that. If you've really boycotted French goods because of their lack of support in the Gulf War, then I pity your ignorance.

I've boycotted all American and French products since we would not exist as a country without French help in the revolutionary war against Britain. Guilt by association can be a bitch, but I'm a patriot.

I'll offer a few vodka comments. A couple of friends of mine and I did a blind vodka tasting of four premium vodkas, with the following rankings:

1. Vox

An awesome vodka. More alcoholic than the others (by which I mean a rougher taste with more heat). But it is also smooth enough to drink in a martini or on the rocks. Has some interesting flavor working. Almost a spiciness. Delicious stuff. The best vodka we tried mixed as well. Takes cranberry and other strong mixers well without simply dissolving in the juice.

2. Grey Goose

A little bit smoother. Was actually my personal winner though not the concensus winner. Probably better in "pure vodka" type drinks, but doesn't have the more complex, heated flavor of Vox and hences doesn't make as interesting a mixed drink.

3. Belvedere

Tastes so pure it's almost boring. On the rocks tasted basically like weak sugar water with a hint of alcohol. I figured this would probably be the best in a high-alcohol drink intended for someone who doesn't like very powerful drinks, like an apple martini or a cosmpolitan.

4. Vincent Van Gogh

A very poor vodka in my opinion. Basically a luxury vodka knock-off that is neither as interesting as Vox nor nearly as smooth as Goose or Belvedere (or Vox, for that matter). No good reason to buy this in my opinion.

I also really like Ketel One and Level. Ciroc is very interesting but, being a grape vodka, is really quite sweet and fruity. Interesting on the rocks with a little lime.

You, sir, know your vodka.

Someone up the thread mentioned Stoli. The regular stuff can't compare to any of the premiums, but Stoli has a black-label version that's definitely worth seeking out.

My wife tried out this stuff called "3" the other night at the local pub. Made from soy, or some [censored] like that.

Said it tasted pretty good, and drank 5 of them in about 2.5 hours. (she weighs 100lbs with rocks in her pockets) She didn't have any hang over the next day either.

If you are interested... (http://www.3vodka.com/)

But the Goose is my personal fave...
