View Full Version : How much $$ to start with at a $5/$10 table?

09-06-2005, 09:37 PM
I've started each day with a $100. I'm still ahead after 10 starts, but it can go rather quickly on any day. Is this a good amount to start with or not?

Party by default sits you down with 25 BB at the table. This is a better number than the 10 BB you sit down with because that can go quickly if you lose a big hand right off the bat. I'd suggest sitting with the 25 BB unless you plan on reloading soon after you sit with only 10.

I start with 30 BB's, but many others start with nothing less than 50. So you should really be sitting down with $300-$500 for 5-10. 25 is ok, too, it's the default, but not as good as 30 or 50.

Where is the "$500" option?

10 BB's is not enough, if you get into a huge pot and need to cap every street, you will run out of money. 15 BB's is enough if you pick up a huge hand, but lose one pot and you will need to reload.

I always buy in for 50 BB's.

Min 50BB, max 100BB, often depends on the size of others' stacks at the table. At only 10BB you could be out in two or three pots, and to me it looks a lot less weak to sit with $400 or $500 and drop $100 than it does to sit with $100 and have to quickly buy back in...

If you sit down with 30BB, do you have a mental stop in place or will you play down to the last chip?

My rule is per table even if i play 4-5 tables

2/4- $200
3/6-$300
5/10-$500
10/20 $750

Committed the cardinal sin the other night of failing to reload when short stacked. Was planning on going home after the next orbit, and didn't feel like buying anymore damn chips, as I was getting killed. So then on my Very Last Hand, I hit my boat on the turn, and we go three bets, with me putting in the last. The other guy river his lower boat, and the only thing I lose to is KK. Since the other guy limped in (and never limps in with a strong hand), I know I'm good. I bet, he raises, and I re-raise a half-bet, cause that's all I got left. He triumphantly tables his rivered J6o boat, and I rake a pot that is short by at least 2.5 bets.

Don't buy short at limit poker. Don't play short at limit poker.

Personally, I always buy in for 50 BBs at any limit. However, Barry Greenstein talks up the virtues of playing a short stack even at limit.

i always go with the default $250 online, and do the same in live games. any less would be silly IMO...your 2 choices in your poll are ridiculous.

i've only lost the $250 3 or 4 times over lots and lots of sessions, so i don't really see the point in buying in higher.

cheers!

I doubt you have the experience and skill needed to play 5/10 online based on both of these questions. its a lot tougher than the live 5/10games

I didn't vote, my default is to buy in for either 25 or 50 big bets, but if I buy in for 25, I will usually rebuy for more if I get low on that table.

On the other hand, Barry Greenstein wrote recently about the virtues of being the shortstack, so I when I get low, I've been playing short instead of reloading until I actually get busted on the table, and that argues for buying in for the minimum, or 5 BBs. I haven't actually tried buying in for the minimum, but that seems to be a more reasonable option than buying in for a semishort stack.

So my answer would be either 5 or 25 big bets.

I sit with 50 BB because it helps me prevent results-oriented tilting. I can lose 15 BB and just keep playing, whereas if I start with 25 BB and lose I'm shortstacked already.

Anytime I see someone sit down with less than the default 25 BBs at Party I prick my ears up a little bit - more often than not they are not good.

the biggest winner in my database is a multitabling 2+2er who buys in for 5bbs at 10/20.

Really? I've never seen anyone buy into 10/20 with $100 only and not suck.

Every time with 50bb... the sites are rigged the way that if you sit down with 50bb you will run better then you should.

I agree and did not vote. If you can handle and benefit from playing short-stacked do so but your strategi is very different to normal play.
Otherwise you should always have enough before a hand starts to cap all streets!
If you want to re-load often or not is up to you.
