I just bailed on my first class, 20 minutes in. It was "US Intellectual History, 1865- present". Looked like the most boring [censored] ever, it took the professor 20 minutes to get everyone seated, let us know there were 3 TAs, and tell us his office hours. It was very detailed. Even the syllabus said there was "extensive reading". I dont think that one's for me. He also added a scary bit, "you need to have a good basic understanding of US history to take this class. stuff like, if you know dont know what the New Deal was, maybe you should reconsider or talk to the TA about a good textbook". I go to Columbia.
Then on the way down, I see a flyer entitled "Why You Should Be a Socialist".
and I quote:
[ QUOTE ]
We live in an upside down world.
The horrific suffering caused by Hurricane Katrina has been magnified by the racism and neglect of the Bush administration. Thousands of poor, primarilt Black residents on the Gulf Coast are dying because Washington values corporate profits more than ordinary people.
Instead of saving lives, Washingtons top concern is "staying the course" in Iraq- the same course that has killed over 100,000 Iraqis and almost 2,000 UStroops. Martin Luther King jr was right when he argued in 1967 that the US government is the "greatest purveyor of violence in the world"
These horrors are not just the result of bad policies and bad politicians- they are rooted in a system that puts profits ahead of people and the sustainability of the planet.
But what is the alternative? Cindy Sheehan, the mother of a slain US soldier who courageously opposes Bush's war, is an inspiring example of the power of ordinary people to change the world- through struggle. Come to a discussion about building a movement that can challenge the entire system and replace it with a humane and democratic alternative.
