I'm in a lecture of about 20 people now. Computer won't allow flash to be installed and I'm getting bored of minesweeper. What's a fun game I can play?

P***r, of course.

Hmm, wonder if I could install it. I'd be a little worried about security though.

Surf porn. Make it a game by guessing whether the girl in the next picture will have a shaved clam or not. If there are classmates who can see the monitor get them in on the game.

Poker is installed. I had to install it to the temp folder, but it runs.

Why do you even bother going? If you're going to make the effort to go to class, pay attention and make it worth something. If not, just don't go. This isn't grade school here (or is it?).

Too true. Just make sure the tuition is paid in full.

I always got annoyed by people doing stuff like this. If you're not going to put out the effort to pay attention and not distract other people, just don't come to class...

I didn't go to class very often...

Actually I found that going to class and not paying attention was still better then not going. If you are there you at least are thinking about the class a little and staying on top of the assignments etc.

I just want to say since this is the second thread on this topic today that instructors are aware which students are and aren't paying attention, which are texting on their cell phones and so on. At least I am aware, and when said students ask for extra help or time I do not treat them kindly.

1) Attendance is part of my grade
2) I pay attention while I play games. They go too slowly for me to pay attention to just them.
3) Once they cover something, I learn it the first time. They repeat it several more times. I can't stand that and I have to distract myself.

This is a good point, too. It's often overlooked. Profs aren't stupid and they're not real happy when you disrespect them.

Are you attending a university? If so, what class has mandatory attendance?

Since it looks like he is using a school computer my guess is some sort of lab.

Yes and I'd say roughly half my classes have had attendance be part of your grade so far. Sometimes it's not just attendance, but other things that require attendance. Eg, daily quizzes.

I know all the reasons students have for doing things like this during lecture. None is sufficient to make feel like I'm not being disrespected.

I'm conflicted here. I taught and did not care people fooled around. I fooled around more than anyone in class (attendance was mandatory for some of my graduate courses even). Problem is mandatory attendence. Let them play! Let them play!

When I taught, I realized it wasn't disrespect towards me, but the system.

Ok, ok, I suppose it was disrespectful and perhaps even un-called for, but this is still me we're talking about, so grain-of-salt please...

Here, how about this...

Isn't this college? From my understanding, this is a fairly common occurance. Atfer-all, in most cases, these students (or their parents) are paying for these courses. It is not unlike many technical trade classes I have taken. Poeple come in, absorb the material they need, and move on.

Sure, it can feel and look a little disrespectful at times, but it's not like people are turning up the sound on their speakers is it? That would be true disrespect.

From my understanding, many students these days carry little recorders for lectures for this very reason, it is a lot easier to listen to the content in a controlled environment, outside of the actual class.

You need to let this type of thing bounce-off you (non-attention to the instructor). Every student is different and that's why the cream rises to the top.

Better?

Interesting that the idea of disrespecting the lecturer even came up. Most Prof could care less if they have the respect of their students. What is annoying is that there are so many students who bitch and complain when they don't sail through exams with perfect grades. As far as I am concerned you can do whatever you want to in class (short of disturbing others) but do not expect any consideration when you start moaning about your bad grades...
