Thinkin' of taking a road trip this winter and I really want to hit some towns where you can feel the gun slingers of old in the air.

Any suggestions?

Virginia City is cool, but far to touristy.

That was exactly the first thing I thought. These towns are all up and down the Sierra also (Nevada City is another), but they're all touristed up as far as I know.

We live close to the Sutter's Mill site at Coloma, and like to pan for gold there on weekends. It's not too bad as far as tourist stuff goes. There is still some gold in the river, too. But most of the old buildings are gone.

My buddy is working an electrical job right now down in socal somewhere and he's been pannin lately to kill time at some river/creek they are camped at. He's actually pulled out some decent stuff.

Another guy there scored a chunk about the size of a small eraser head.

Fun stuff.

Bodie, an abandoned mining town with most of the buildings and their contents intact. Bodie website (http://www.bodie.com/)

Damn, Bodie looks pretty cool.

Deadwood does have live poker (http://deadwoodnuts.blackhills.com/) going for it.

Tombstone Arizona, I went a few years ago, I thought it was pretty cool though it is out of the way from everything and it has turned into somewhat of a tours-trap.

This place (http://montanakids.com/db_engine/presentations/presentation.asp?pid=103&sub=Ghost+Towns+of+Montan a) rocks as far as a "real" feeling ghost town. It'll be cold in the winter but you'll have the place to yourself.
