My computer shuts down randomly. This started a little less than a year ago. I don't know what causes it and I have reformatted, which didn't fix anything.

Is this likely to be an overheating issue? If so, how do I fix it?

This is the last time I custom make a computer /images/graemlins/frown.gif

Does it happen after the computer has been running for a long time? If so an overheating issue is more likely the cause.

It completely varies. It can be 15 minutes or two days. Sometimes I'm sitting here, sometimes I'm away. I don't think it's ever happened while I was playing a full screen game.

i just got a temperature detector, and it says two of the temperatures are 68 and 59 degrees celsius -- are these too high?

Because you touch yourself at night.

do you use winxp ? try turning off the auto-reboot on errors feature. then you might get some error messages that might help figure out the problem next time it happens.

go to the control panel -> system -> advanced -> start up and recovery
uncheck 'automatically restart' under system failure.

Yes. 68c is way too hot. Servers in our datacenter will shut themselves down at 70c.

That probably won't make that much of a difference. You need to invest in more fans or replace the ones you have with ones that move more air.

I know a guy who has a fan with a toilet paper tube attached, pointed right at the heat sink.

Does that help? It seems counterproductive.

Also to the OP, you also might wanna try removing the heatsink and reapply some thermal compound like Artic Silver and/or replace the heatsink itself.

it is most likely a overheating issue, your temps are way too high...this could be caused by not enough fans or not enough room inside your case...

it also might be caused by having too weak of a power supply...depending on what kind of comp you have you may need a 550W or a 600W supply...
