That is hard to believe. Not showing up for duty, quitting after a couple days, leaving town, etc - but killing yourself over a job?? I don't get it.

Read some Joseph Wambaugh (http://tinyurl.com/ctcqb). Suicide is a common theme in his cop books.

Over a job?
NOOOO!
They just happened to be cops. I'm sure there are other people who killed themselves.
The ones in the story: One lost his home and his wife. Imagine losing your city, your home, your wife... probably the person most imortant to you. Try to imagine that.

Also - these people have been dealing with this disaster for a week now. They likely have had very little sleep. Lack of sleep makes people go crazy - there are countless studies on this.
