Disclaimer: It goes without saying that every song The Beatles have ever recorded go before everything in all of the lists posted here, that's why I'm going to be focusing on the Top 5 songs of all time minus The Beatles.

1. DCFC - Transatlanticism
2. Iron & Wine - Trapeze Swinger
3. Iron & Wine - Passing Afternoon
4. DCFC - A Lack of Colour
(5. Sia - Breathe Me)

The 5th one keeps changing every week, so I'll just throw a tentative Sia - Breathe Me in loving memory of Six Feet Under.

No offense, but when you have Radiohead and John Mayer in your list and have failed to include "Hotel California" or "Desperado"...come on...

I think the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's webpage had them listed as such (I can't recall the order):

Stairway to Heaven
Purple Haze
Imagine
Yesterday
Satisfaction
Light My Fire
Like a Rolling Stone
Johnny B. Goode
Layla
My Generation

Not perfect but not bad at all. Obviously just for classic rock, though.

Your list was moderately acceptable until you included Blink 182. You must be out of your [censored] mind.

Ok, there were three or four songs tied for 5th place - pick whichever one of these makes you happy:
Bottle Rocket - The Go! Team
This Modern Love - Bloc Party
Rebellion (Lies) - The Arcade Fire

How many times is a thread like this going to be done until we realize that there is no such thing as the greatest song, or songs, ever.

exactly. too many 'top 5's to fit in a top 5.

If we're talking best songs of all time ... Here's mine:

1. Ring of Fire -- Johnny Cash
2. Red House -- not sure who wrote it, but I like Hendrix's version best any many have done versions
3. Texas Flood -- Stevie Ray Vaughan
4. Sexual Healing -- Marvin Gaye version, though Soul Asylum did well
5. I wanna live -- The Ramones

PairTheBoard
09-04-2005, 04:56 PM
1. "My Girl" - The Temptations
2. "Louie Louie" - the Kingsmen
3. "Sara Smile" - Hall & Oats
4. "Sultans of Swing" - Dire Straits
5. "Cortez the Killer" - Neil Young
6. "Is it a Crime" - Sade
7. "The Warmth" - Incubus
8. "Long Train Running" - Doobie Brothers (Without Love, where would you be now)
9. "Rumors" - Fleetwood Mac (Best Album)
10. "You Can't Hurry Love" - The Supremes

and then tomorrow we can do it all again in case things change

That's probably why I said "Here's Mine" rather than "Here's Gorie's".

I own virtually everything the Ramone's put out, aside from maybe an import or a few, not sure. I just happen to think I wanna live is their best song. The Replacements also used to do a great rendition of this song live, but I don't think it ever ended up on a recording.

Radiohead = best post 70s band
John Mayer = VERY underrated only because a large contingent of his audience are teenage girls

How can all these lists have songs that were released in the past six months? two years? Why do some people express doubt in their choices? Seems to be the best of all time shouldn't be so current and subject to change.

Hasn't anyone heard any version of "Neon"??? WTF is this "Georgia" crap? It's an ok tune, but clearly not his best. "Neon" is it, bro (and perhaps "Your Body is a Wonderland" 'cause if you can play guitar and can sing this, yer a gettin' laid there chief).

Many people I know say, "John Mayer sucks", and I say "Wait 'til you hear 'Neon'".

I play it (pretty much any version, although I haven't listened to him since he went radio, so I don't know what the studio version of "Neon" sounds like), and people are blown away.

"Neon" would be top 5, for sure.

Merle Haggard

I turned 21 in prison
Doin' life without parole
Noone could steer me right
But mama tried mama tried
Mama tried to raise me better
But her pleading I denied
That leaves only me to blame
Cause mama tried

Now THAT is a song my friend.

Just listened to the "Room for Squares" studio version of "Neon", courtesy of Limewire.

Even amped up and jazzy, this song is the shiz.
