I hope that Bush nominates the most repugnantly conservative judge imaginable and the Senate majority shoves him right down the Democrats throat, invoking the Constiutional option if necessary. Its time for some good political theater.

That's all we need right now in the US. More divisive controversy.

This would be the Bush Standard Operating Procedure.

To fully comply with his normal nomination standards, the Judge in question should have been previously disbarred for some 2nd degree felony type offense, and can only legally practice law in a small corner of Guam.

If he insists on entering the court room with an AK-47, a pit bull, and two bibles, this would be an added plus.

I am pretty sure that this was the original plan. Whether the fallout from Katrina makes an obviously divisive nominee less likely I don't know.

Roberts was the distraction he needed fromthe Rove fiasco.

Now he has a chance to help us all forget about the dead, dying, and homeless in the Gulf (both of them) with another "good man".

Anyway, I sure Dobson, has already told Bush who to nominate.

Rehnquist's death will change nothing on the court. Do you see why?

Actually, BigBait's post was one of the most intelligent in this thread. It's (a) true, and (b) pretty obvious as to why.

While the call for more description is deserving, I have absolutely no idea why you've decended into namecalling. You don't even know what his point is.

First of all, please do not use epithets to make your point, especially not ones referring to sexual orientation. This will typically get you banned. I'll not ban you, since I'm the target. You may think me stupid, but please find a more appropriate way of saying so than name-calling.

My point was that Rehnquist was an ultra-conservative, who will be replaced by another ultra-conservative. That is why his death will not impact the balance of the court, or the direction it has taken. It is possible that a conservative will change his/her views (which has been known to happen before) once appointed, but the bottom line here is that the way the Supremes vote on critical issues is unlikely to change.

Actually, liberals should be very happy about this because there's nowhere to go but up for them, and given the track record of republican-appointed judges, liberals are likely to end up the winners when it's all said and done.

Bush cannot possibly appoint a better conservative than Rehnquist, but there's plenty of room for him to screw up and appoint a liberal by accident, which republicans have tended to do on average.

Once on the court, a person cannot be removed or voted off (barring extraordinary circumstances). Released from political pressures, sometimes Justices change their opinions, or perhaps allow their true opinions to show. This has the impact of causing some to become more liberal.

BigBait, can I nominate you for CJ? Excellent understanding of the Court and its history.

Hello chomsky53,

You are hereby asked not to call other posters names. Please see the "Welcome" at the top of the forum for guidelines for posting. I've asked many posters not to do this, and now I'm asking you. Name-calling does nothing to elevate the discourse and can do much to derail discussions. So please abide by this guideline, and try to attack the poster's argument or assertion rather than the poster himself.

You are also hereby cautioned that use of certain pejorative termsor slurs can get you banned. I banned someone today for violating this (after they violated it again after being asked not to). See the Operating Policies of the Terms and Conditions for the rule against posting objectionable content.

You are welcome to post here in a reasonably civil manner, as is everyone else, regardless of political persuasion or views. Just try to keep it civil; that isn't really a lot to ask, and it does help the forum and threads flow much better.

On the other hand, if you'd like to be banned, feel free to ask to be banned;-) Some people have self-banned themselves from casinos so I don't see why this forum should not offer that option if so desired;-)

Anyway since this is my first interaction with you I want to say that I'm not singling you out. That's it, and best wishes for continued posting if that's what you would like to do while abiding by the Terms and Conditions of use for this website and the Posting Guidelines. You might wish to read the "Welcome" stickied at the top of the forum.

Good day.

M
