the Natl guard has set up a checkpoint at the bridges out of the city and are NOT allowing anyone to leave...they are forcing them to stay in the city, which is another way to say "they are under arrest"

this was shown on Fox News where the anchors were begging the govt to let people leave

What was the reason given, if I might ask?

Because the people of New Orleans are sinners and Bush wants them to die.

Well, if they're sinners, than isn't it God who is probably telling the Nat'l Guard not to let people out? Should be only a matter of time till we just shoot what's left of New Orleans...

I think the reason was that he didn't want a bunch of desperate, homeless people flooding other communities and wreaking possible havoc.

Probably a good idea if your only keeping someone isolated for a day or two with adequate provisions but a disaster if you do it for 5 with zero provisions.

they didn't say or know...they were just pleading for the govt to let these people go

as long as they check them for weapons, stolen goods, etc then there is NO reason to keep people confined to a flooded city that has limited/no water/food

That's what I suspected, but just wanted confirmation.

I would disagree that there is zero provisions in N.O. The problem is probably getting the food to the people or vice versa. And it would probably become even tougher if everyone starts wandering off.

Why does Tek make these random posts insulting anyone that thinks moral fiber might come from deeper belief's than ones-self?

Some of these people have been wandering around in water that has human and animal feces in it and also decaying bodies. The possibility of contracting a disease from this situation is extremely high. These people must be kept in a contained area (either the convention center or the Astrodome in Houston) until they can be cleared by medical personnel and they are being checked when they arrive at the Astrodome. Yes it is a shame that they have not been given adequate food and water but if they are allowed to leave without being checked for contagious diseases the results could be much worse.

This obviously correct. It couldn't possibly be the following:

1) Controlling orderly refugee flow
2) Keeping roads open the bring in food and water
3) Making sure they aren't the crazy fucks who started shooting up the place
4) Some other issue the national guard thought of that we didn't.

You really don't understand the big picture of how these operations run. You can't draw conclusions based on little snippets of information.

so u'd be ok with being told u are NOT allowed to leave and move freely through America? if you were in NO when this happened and you spent days working to get to the bridge so u could get to the other side and then meet family or friends or just catch a bus ride to another city to get a job and start a new life, would u be ok with being told you cannot leave? that is called "arrest"

it's ok when it's others...but would u really be so understanding if u were the one being told u cannot leave?

You're right. But what could be the possible explanation for why tourists were allowed to cut in line to get onto evacuation busses today? Why them, when they were most like the MOST able to evacuate BEFORE the storm.

Here's what happened: Those tourists were in a schmancy hotel that still had all its facilities working -- phones, water, etc. The police stations were all out of commission.

The mayor made a deal: He would evacuate those tourists out of the city with priority if they agreed to leave the hotel so that the police could use the hotel as a base. The tourists agreed and the mayor kept his word. I'm sure it wasn't an easy decision for the mayor, but he did what he thought was necessary.
