You guys think this would be a good time to buy a new car, specifically a v8, or an SUV? I need a new car, dont care about paying for gas, but you think the cars that guzzle are cheaper now?

I think if you were to buy a used American SUV you'd get a deal.

Ya, I have it narrowed down to a few cars, but just havent had the kick in the ass to go out and buy it, I figured this might be a good time to find one.

Penny wise and pound foolish huh.

Why do you care so much about saving money on the car, but have no regard for gas prices.

Say you buy one of these gas guzzlers that gets 12 mpg city style vs. one of those hybrids that gets like 48 mpg city. The used gas guzzler will cost you like 8k? Whereas hybrids will now cost more, something like 30k? For what integer of mpg would the gas guzzler be more efficient? Exactly.

Edit- my numbers are probably a bit off, and as I dont' feel like doing math/research, I'm just showing how the EV works.

Well, heres teh point. I dont necassarily care about saving money, but would rather have a nice, luxurious, car that I like a lot, and like to drive. Im going to spend the money one way or the other, I was just curious if right now, because of the prices, I could find a better deal.

Also the fact that I dont drive much makes it more appealing.

dont listen to all these haters. I've got a brand new shiny SUV with a V8 and I get like 17mpg with it, and I love every second of it!

The discrepency between an average car (sedan, I need the room), and a SUV is not that much. 18 compared to 12 gallons city driving. I rarely use more than a tank a week. 18$ a week is the difference at current gas prices. There are 52 weeks in a year, if I drive the car for 2-3 years, I need to save about 2500$ on the car to be a good deal.

They will probably go down in price due to the gas price rising.

Maybe the used ones a little bit, but not that much. People aren't convinced prices will stay high, and they have to stay high for quite awhile to justify knocking any serious money off to sell your vehicle in a hurry.

[/ QUOTE ]

No, because
1) Bush will do whatever he can to keep prices down (like removing environmental regs) and
2) The tax incentives to buy gas guzzlers still exist and car manufacturers know this - they have no reason to lower prices when people will still buy since they can just make up the price difference in tax subsidies.
