Cell phone advice needed

I've never had a cell phone before. I think I've decided on using the verizon service. Are there any online coupons or better ways to do this other than $40/mo which seems to be the cheapest service they offer. Also I always hear about people getting free phones with a new service, but I went to the local verizon dealer and there was no free phones, but only like $80-90+ phones. Are there periodical deals I should wait for or something? Should I buy a phone on eBay instead somehow?

oh yeah, what do you guys think of some sort of pay-as-you-go service? I won't be using the phone ALL that often (since I have no friends), but I have no landline phone, so it will be my ONLY phone.

dont use pay as you go..its a rip off. pay 30 a month for a basic plan and you're set

You're in Chicago, surely there's a better deal. Try T-Mobile or U.S. Cellular.
