Belgian beer is the best in the world.

unfortunately, white beer is a terrible example of how good Belgian beer can be.

also, the Leffe you posted is blonde, not white

Hoegaarden is my fave.

btw Leffe is a blonde ale, not a witbeir

I would rather drink the New Orlans stank water than waste money on this beer.

But if it were GIVEN to me, I would drink it.
But I damn sure wouldn't enjoy it

any Trappist style beer, of which there are literally hundreds.

2 brands widely available (in the US) are both Duvel and Chimay. note that these taste much different than Hoeggarden. they are also quite expensive - almost always the most expenive beer in the store.

I consider Stella, like Hoeggardan, "Belgian" beer. I mean, it's from belgium, but in reality, Stella is not unlike many other crisp tasting beers. Trappist beers are a completely different category, and quality.

giving either of these beers as an example of great Belgium beer is like giving Chicken Parm as a great example of Italian food.

I'm not a huge fan of this style anymore, but when I used to love it, Allagash White was always my favorite.

If you've looked up info on their website, they should have a page that says who their US distributors are, and maybe what types they export. Call up the distributor for your region and ask.

Leffe is not even close to a white beer.

I also hate Hoegaarden.

Stella is my favorite among lagers.

Leffe is a heavy beer, but not "trappist". There are only seven beers in Belgium that can carry that name, they have to live up to all kinds of standards, not in the last being brewed by real live monks (yeah, i know...).

Anyway, my favorites are Westmalle Triple and Orval.

Edit: with regard to distributors: Hoegaarden, Leffe and Stella are all brewed and distributed by Interbrew (worldwide).

good idea. ill have to do some more research though. leffe's website is not in english. i think this will take some google work. should be worth it though since that beer is truly the best ive ever had.

the website i posted was an importer's site for a different country. it was just the best i could find in english.

Looks like interbrew changed it's name. Go to www.inbev.com. (http://www.inbev.com.)

Blue Moon is made by Coors. (http://www.coors.com/brews/blueMoon.asp) , and tastes like it. Which is to say that it has very little taste. I have never tasted a commercial Belgian white in this country that can hold a candle to home brew. And you can't have any of mine /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Stella is the Bud of Belgian beers. I think it sucks as well compared to almost any other belgian beer.

Just a note: the company that owns the brewery is not the same as your local distributor. For instance, when I was looking into getting certain kinds of beer from Stone (http://www.stonebrew.com), I looked up the local distributor on their page, which is a company called Horizon Beverage or something here in Nashville.

I'm not sure how it works for imports, but more than likely they all import through one firm in NYC or something, and then ship out to your local beer guys, who then deliver to the retail places.

i thought it tasted just like budweiser...

i wasnt that impressed.

i think there are 3 types of Chimay, red blue and tan.

I think blue is the best and red is the cheapest, or it could be tan is the most expensive.

its like 9% ABV.

Buy a case of Trappist Rochefort, it's one of the best beers in the world. A case may cost you $150 in the states, while its just $2 a bottle over there, blah.

I cant remember what Trappist was recentely voted best in the world, but I had it when I was in brussels and thought the Rochefort was just as good.
