We were discussing this on another board I frequent. At face value, it is kind of disturbing, but there are some factors that might go into it-

1) It might be 2 different people writing captions- one person classifies everything as looting, while the other softens it with the 'found'.

2) It might be a value judgement on WHAT was looted. Seeing someone leave a grocery store with a bag full of food vs someone leaving a jewelry store with a bagful of diamonds.

3) It might be that the caption writer is a redneck racist /images/graemlins/grin.gif

FWIW, I don't condone any looting. However, I understand that some people ended up getting stranded in NO due to circumstances beyond their control, and now find themsleves without food or potable water. I can understand helping yourself to some essentials in order to feed yourself and your family.

OTOH, people stealing jewelry, booze, designer clothing, etc need to put down by a sniper. They are the worst kind of scum.

That is mildly amusing, but I don't think Yahoo! is doing much editorial here, they are just putting up images/captions that they get from various news outlets.

Well, I recommend these steps:

1) admit you are a moron who unfamiliar with how the AP wire works.

2) realize that they update captions with relevant info as it becomes available. In this case, the fact that the people were looting.

3) Observe that in fact the timestamps support this theory.

4) Verify your stupidity by observing any number of AP wire updates throughout the course of any day.

1) Yahoo news did not write these captions. They're just posted on their site. The caption come from the wires they got them from.

2) The captions are written by two different organizations. The Associated Press and the Agence France-Presse are not the same. So you really can't compare the captions.

Could you explain what timestamps are and how they work? (what is a timestamp, how can I see it, etc.) I see a date and time above each caption, but you seem to be implying that I should be able to see multiple "times". Cuz im having trouble understanding what is truly different about the situations in the photos other than the fact that one caption says looting and one says finding.

Regardless of any timestamps, I'm wondering what "relevant info" distinguishes "finding" from "looting".

Caption #2 says they "found" bread and soda from a local grocery store. Is that different than looting? Other than the fact that looting sounds like a crime and finding doesn't?

The kid has a trash bag, but the other two have backpacks (how do you know what is in either?) Not that that is the point.

taking bread during a disaster and a garbage bag full of stuff are two different things.
of course the backpacks could be full, and the garbage bag empty. and it could be the other way around as well. maybe you are saying the white folks are smarter looters because they came prepared? or maybe the white folks are dumber because they didnt use a bigger bag?
it can be twisted any way you want. point is, who cares?

The point is, the different language used in each of the captions describing these two, essentially the same, events, can have a significant effect on how readers perceive each event relative to the other. You appear to be exhibit A.
