Lesser versions of this happen every year in the pilgrimage to Mecca.

Still unclear - this from a BBC Newsnight journalist:
[ QUOTE ]

Tonight Mark Urban examines the implications of todays tragedy in Baghdad. First this morning seven people at a mosque were killed by a mortar attack, and then rumours of a suicide bomber led to a stampede at the Shia religious festival in the capital. That resulted in at least 600 Shia pilgrims dead and several hundred injured, but the British government and the Iraqi authorities appear to be at odds over the origins of the panic.

The Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said "the stampede which caused these deaths was started by mortar attacks. This was a despicable assault on innocent civilians attending a religious ceremony at the local mosque." Iraq's Defence Minister said the stampede was not related to sectarian tensions gripping the country. He went on to say, "Only the seven that were killed this morning were killed by the terrorists." Were the two events unrelated or is there a civil war unfolding in everything but name?

Yes, but these stampedes occur for much different reasons. In the US they happen because of cheap Macs.

Indeed. Though the evil part of me can't help but think, "Christ, what a dumb way to die."
