6.50 Turbo. MP is loose. I'm not sure what my line should've been here. My thinking at the time was that I had too many chips to just push preflop, but when he calls and I don't hit, I'm at sea. The 800 bet is clearly bad. I think 600 might've been better--it's half his stack but perhaps I can get away there. The problem is, I believe this opponent is capable of doing this with nothing.

So, anyway, I know I played it badly but I'm confused as to what I should've done.

Preflop looks fine. On the flop, I'd lean towards checking behind.

If he's loose, what does he likely have here, given the limp-call preflop?
mid pairs: probably will call a push, and you're down to 5 outs + backdoors.
assorted paint cards with no king: you're ahead here, and he might call a push.
assorted paint cards with a K: he wont fold, and you're way behind.
Assorted junk cards: You're ahead, but he wont call.

So it comes down to the chance of each happening, and I think the two you dont want to see (mid pair or Kx) happen often enough that checking behind is a smart play. Obviously you have him covered, but if you double him up you're essentially crippled. Take advantage of your position and see a free turn, and go from there. If he checks the turn, then you can put him all in more safely.

Push the flop.
