Shajen

The word "data" is plural. Datum is singular.

"This datum shows the reference zero point."

"These data clearly illustrate..."

I would like to state for the record that even though CW is correct, "datum" is a retarted word.

data (http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=data&x=0&y=0)

[ QUOTE ]
usage: Data leads a life of its own quite independent of datum, of which it was originally the plural. It occurs in two constructions: as a plural noun (like earnings), taking a plural verb and plural modifiers (as these, many, a few) but not cardinal numbers, and serving as a referent for plural pronouns (as they, them); and as an abstract mass noun (like information), taking a singular verb and singular modifiers (as this, much, little), and being referred to by a singular pronoun (it). Both constructions are standard. The plural construction is more common in print, evidently because the house style of several publishers mandates it.

It's important because it tells you where things are in relation to other things. This is why the body panels in your car fit together as they should, for example.

So if Patrick said, "Hey, Dude. I still need that data from you," instead of, "Hey, Dude. I still need that datum from you," we'd have rockets miscienced and crashing all over the place? /images/graemlins/confused.gif
