View Full Version : The art of retouching

Everyone knows that photos in Playboy, Maxim, etc... are retouched, but this site shows the dramatic differences between the before and after shots.

Some of the women are pretty nasty looking in the before shots...

yea its pretty nuts. one girl from wake posed in the girls of the ACC playboy and she looked pretty good. the only problem being she had a tad bit of an acne problem and looked like she had been stabbed in the face with a pitchfork

Holy crap, that guy adds at least a full point to most of the women on that page.

this is nothing....some of these women are well-known and cannot be changed too dreatically without someone calling "foul."

My friend Dave is a fashion photog. and I have seen him in action on photoshop - changing a girl's eyes with someone elses, giving a girl smoother skin, bigger tits, no cellulite, etc....it's amazing.

When he worked for Playboy, he got into a huge argument with them over a certain Playmate - Nicole Lenz. She's a very pretty girl but she happens to have a lot of freckles - all over her face and body. Nothing wrong with that for most guys, right? Well, when David saw what the Playboy retouchers did, he threw a fit and vowed to never work for them again.

Nicole was completely retouched so that it looked like she had no freckles.

before (NSFW) (http://images1.moviemarket.co.uk/library/autograph/991369.jpg) it's hard to find a photo that isn't retouched of her, but she is covered in freckles!
after (NSFW) (http://www.frostylips.com/paris_hilton/nl_004x.jpg)

Keep in mind this is the guy who is doing the retouching's website so I'm sure he is going to make the difference look as dramatic as possible. Its like any other before and after the before is meant to look as bad as possible and the after meant to look as night as possible.

i posted this once before in some thread about the playboy centerfolds. after noticing how different the old centerfolds looked compared to todays standards (plastic looking).
i was bored and curious to get an idea of what this 1960s centerfold would look like if retouched by todays standards so i played around in photoshop (of course my retouching sucks but you get the point /images/graemlins/tongue.gif)

original:

new:

but, i do understand retouching and to me that's just expected in a professional photograph. i just think it's annoying to see half of womens bodys chopped off as often as i seem to, knowing most people think that is how women should look.

i rounded them out a bit more , but yeah not big enough /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

also should have plumped up her butt a bit more, that seems to be popular in the link above!!

This is botherson in portrait photography, but it is unfortunately here to stay. People are obsessed with perfection and marketing firms know how to sell to them.

The problem for me is when this practice overflows into photo journalism, as it did with the commuter train bombing a while back in Madrid. There was a very popular photo that most outlets ran as their cover, however, it had body parts photoshoped out to 'sterilize it' for public consumption, as if tradegy of this or any other kind could ever be sterilzed.

News is news and if an image is too graphic to be shown, then it should not be shown. Period. Unfortunately, just as we see in todays portrait photography...marketing always wins.

Ahem.

Her boobs actually look smaller in the second photo. This is absolute proof that gorie is a girl.

btw none of this is surprising to me at all since i work in a professional photography lab and see retouched/unretouched photos every day. i'm sure most people here have had family or senior high school portraits taken with standard retouching done. of course probably not as overdone as the link above, but still. i mean really, who wants to spend hundreds of dollars on a portrait of themselves only to see wrinkles, bags, blemishes, etc ? people want to look nice.

I disagree. Women are bombarded with these fake images of artificially enhanced models which have become the standard of most men's expectations. Women want to look like that just because they are being compared to them.

Most men realise that even if the supermodels really do look like that, their chance of meeting and scoring with them is not very high. They also understand that real women just aren't made that way.

Now boys will certainly compare you pound for pound, but they don't know any better. They haven't been with a real woman before.

So while the retouching is pretty amazing and can go over the top, it's all about marketing, and a secure woman (does one exist?) would not feel threatened by it, unless she prefers going out with boys rather than men.

My sister is a model, so I've known about photo retouching and all that. A lot of the shots she does go untouched, but there were a few where retouching improved the photo significantly, which makes it more marketable.

Anyway, girls who spend large amounts of time in the morning putting on makeup are doing their own "retouching" every day. It's pretty close to the same thing. If one is okay, I don't see the problem with the other. Everyone wants to look better.

Soooo not necessary. These women are fine. I hate these airbrushed photos, the skin doesn't even look real.

plus yeah i suck at retouching.

actually i'm sure the original has some type of retouching done to it as well. negative retouching has been around a long time. i wonder when in time they started cutting women in half though.
