Does anybody have a clue in a general perspective of how good different nations are?
There has been a lot of talk that scandinavians are good (tight), english are crap and americans generally looser and more aggressive...
Does anybody have any knowledge about this subject?

The only thing I have noticed online is that English and Australian players play like total maniacs. They'll raise/rerasie you with crap, donk bet all over the place, bluff you on the river, etc.

I played on Doyle's Room a little bit and for some reason there was a high concentration of UK and Aussie players and they were all complete maniacs.

I've also noticed it on PP a little bit.

I guess they are looking for a good gamb0000l.

sweedes are good because they are naturally intelligent.

World domination poker is exercised by Germans

If they were intelligent they'd stand up to their feminists! What a horror show Sweden is politically.

Here are my top secret prejudices.

Americans - the majority, difficult to tell anything. Obessively patriotic Americans (the kind who get into chat arguments about saving Britian in WW2) are total complete fish (and easily tilted even further into idiocy).

Scandinavians - Generally aggressive, this makes the good ones tough to play against and the bad ones easy to beat.

Brits - again, a big group, but perhaps slightly better than the average American since poker isn't as much of a cultural phenomenon (except for the ones who get involved in Yank hating arguments).

Australians - donks pure and simple, but given the they have the lowest average IQ of all nations this is to be expected.

New Zealanders - great players, each and every one. They're also devilishly handsome and generous and funny and modest /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

French - fold too easily /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Turks - absolute freaking maniacs one and all. Possibly don't even know the hand rankings.

Tight? I played with a Fin for the last year who won a sh*t load of tournies, and he was the loosest most aggressive guy at the tables. Guess hes been away from home too long. PS: Canadians own poker.

Technically they never agreed to Articles of Confederation, which was ratified over a period of 3 1/2 years and was signed by a group of men who were not all in the Congress at the same time. There are still plenty of rebs that are still fighting for secession, albeit (mostly) not as violently... personally I say we go whip their butts again to resolve the issue /images/graemlins/wink.gif

The South officially left the Union but never officially "rejoined." As far as I'm concerned we're captives.

I can't believe no one has mentioned asians. EVERY asian that has EVER played poker is laggy. They also have a penchant for proclaiming "Button Move!" louder than is necessary.

Asians are too inscrutable, I can't ever put 'em on a hand /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Americans for the most part (except for the beatniks who like to sit out commenting on every hand but never getting involved) like to trap and check-raise a lot to provoke weaker hands, at which point we can justifiably respond with hyper-aggression. This tactic works especially well if we can get a couple other players involved in the hand to blame if we should happen to lose. We'll then proceed to explain how the hand should have been played... for their own good, of course. The money we make is incidental (I know you believe that), but we'll keep it because they were obviously not advanced enough to use it wisely anyway.

Peace to the world /images/graemlins/cool.gif

I think this is the most important determinant by far. A lot of americans that I play against seem to have their own home-made poker strategy that they have put together from tv-poker or what their father once told them as a boy about the game.

In contrast, most scandinavians I know who play poker (I'm from Norway), have no illusions about knowing the game when they start out. This makes them study hard and not blaming losses on bad luck, which IMO are two of the most important factors to being a winning player.

What's with all the negative posts about Aussies? I mean, isn't the current World Champion from down under (Aussie, Aussie, Aussi, Oy, Oy, Oy)?
None of you seem to mention the dominating Russian players (Sergei Federov, Pavel Bure, Nikolai Khabibulin....oops, wrong sport).
Why are there no great players from Bangladesh?
Are there any players from Kenya or Uganda?
I'm sure Native Americans have good poker faces.
Did I pay the cable bill?
Am I wearing out my welcome?

Haha you dorks.

My most profitable period is late afternoon when dumb Americans are getting tired and/or drunk. My playing sessions are based around the US drinking cycle. Pure and simple.

It seems people here back my long held feeling that players from the UK are for the most part absolutely terrible, some of the worst I have seen, any theories on why this is?

In my experience in SSNL swedes are pretty bad, apparently they are sicko agg at higher levels though.

i dont know why nobody mentioned vietnamese players, there are a ton of succesful ones - men/scotty nguyen, chau giang, mimi tran, tuan li, john pham, etc. many of those guys around

Three reasons

1) Most people in the UK who get into poker do so through a sports bookmakers website and so have a gambling mentality to start with.

2) The UK as two satelite channels showing poker 12+ hours a day and another 5+ channels showing some poker 5+ times a week. Most of this is edited final table or single table shoot out NL holdem. So to the casual player, poker is all about big bluffs and the all-in move.

3) Finally theres the mental thing that the Brits in general feel uncormfortable about winning, we as nation prefer the valiant loser over the brash winner.
