View Full Version : Fight Club

I just watched this movie for like the 10th time, and i love it. I get all psyched up, like "fukc all our material bull$hit, i am not the things that i buy" but then i realize that i like my computer and my clothes and my car, and that anarchy is worse than capitalism. I dunno, just wanted to talk about the movie. Anyone else want to, go ahead. Also, if anyone has read the book, tell me if its better or what. I might pick it up.

This movie is about more than letting go of material possessions/anarchy/fighting. A LOT MORE.

I personally think the book is better. The ending is different (don't want to spoil) and the homoeroticism is even more apparent between "the two" (well, time for me to get accused of more gay comments..but it really makes the book better).

See, this is another one of those cherished modern cult classics, a la Office Space, that I'm just not that into. I mean, I enjoyed it, but that stuff / no stuff dichotomy just isn't that important to me. I enjoy the artifacts of civilization, but I'm not that materialistic.

fight club is an awesome movie, but you cant talk about it at all (especially on the internet) because anytime you say something, some dick will jump out and tell you "there is alot more to it" and that "they read the book" and that "msot people dont understand it".

Now that it is a cult sensation and everyone loves it and related to it, its been ruined because now its cool to understamd it and love it, and all the pseudo intellectuals have raped it to death until its no fun to even talk about it or mention it.

it's more to do with disolving the ego, and not caring too much about whether things should be a cetain way or not. kinda like going with the flow, but in a more extreme sense. not putting too much importance on outcomes or possesions, and just living in the moment. the extremity of the film is just used to help further the point.

#1 - Fight Club sucked ass.

#2 - most people under 30 don't know [censored] about anything.

#1 is debatable
#2 will piss you off as you are under 20, but you'll get it someday, and is a lame attempt by me to hijack a thread by starting a discourse known in internet circles as a flame war.

I'm like one of the only people I know that didn't like this. Partially because I hated all three main characters (Pitt, Norton, Carter), and partly because I knew that Pitt and Norton were the same person almost immediately, figured it out during the morning-after-their-first-time scene when Norton and Carter are talking and Pitt is "hiding in the basement." Seemed obvious. And I hated the ending more than anything.

I do realize I am in the minority.

Unlike other people who answered my question as to what else there was in the movie ( and i did want to know) you have simply told me to go kill myself. Clarification : I have been told to kill myself because I wanted to know more.

Chucks books can be very interesting, I recommend checking out a few other than FC if you liked the film, a lot of crazy scatter-brained ish. The film was very well done IMO in grabbing some essence from the text, still worth a read though.

As for the movie, I really liked it, but eventually grew a distaste for it due to how incredibly popular it is in my age demo. I 'm just one of those people who cant like something that is popular among idiots.

Funny how for most it's kind of a animalistic/idealistic sort of idea, as most of the kids I know who would quote it had beamers and were draped in A&F. I'm fond of the idea as well but am far too tainted by society to really hail it. Reminds me of the fact that no matter how much the writings of HDT or Buddist texts can influence my life, it's still BS because if I was truly in touch with the texts I wouldnt be such a materialistic bastard. Instead I take what I can and use it for the best, kind of like how some people use religion, and I dont think theres really anything wrong with that.

I don't think fightclub was like this however, I doubt that most people I know got something out of it, it was just an reminder (as many of CP's works are) of the tension and anger burning under the surface of many people in modern society. Maybe I'm wrong, anyone here really get something from it?

I think they did an excellent job with casting to boot.

I was gunna make fun of you for how lame this statement is, especially when taken in the context of what the meaning of fight club is all about. Then I realized it sounds like you already know this, and just don't care. I really respect that kinda self honesty, even if I think the outcome is dumb. So now instead, im gunna go do something else.

I realized that when writing it but screw it, you got the idea though, doesnt really matter if others dont. Rationally I know its stupid but it's something I deal with (in moderation) I suppose. This tendency of mine obviously also goes against the context of FC itself, as you mentioned, which goes along with the fact I can't "let go" in certain situations that the story might suggest the audience to do, which I can admit. Now I'm rambling.

The book is better than the movie, like most are. I saw the movie based on a movie review I read in the paper. I subsequently read the book and most of the other CP books.

The book is better, but seeing the movie first helps visualize some of the things in the book that are kind of vague.

The movie has so many classic lines. I haven't been [censored] like that since grade school. Awesome. That should be my location.

this is actually one of the very very few movies I liked better than the book. And the book is good, so thats actually saying something.

I dont remember if its in the commentaries or I read it in an interview somewhere, but chuck said something to the effect of the movie kind of made him embarrased about the book, because the movie was better and its what he wished his book would have been.

I imagine there will be many "soooooooooooo overrated" posts, you may not be such.

08-29-2005, 03:51 PM
I remember buying into this movie hard when I first saw it some five years ago.

I thought it was great, man! I mean, c'mon dude! Raging against materialism, the evils of a capitalist society, widening your experiences in life through pain and dischord, and more! HELL YEAH!

Now, five years later, and I just don't get it. I'm confused as to the "profound" meaning of the movie.

My theory on the movie? Its open to interpretation. Everyone takes a certain piece of the movie that they can relate to and explains how it affected them in their own way.

For me, now, I now see it as expounding on the idea of living in a "dynamic" life; that is, its better to create change around you instead of allowing life itself to pass you by. Not surprisingly, this is something I now hold above almost everything else in my life.

Anyway, thats my theory.

Ready Egocide's posts in this thread, and then you'll understand why these discussions generate those reponses. That guy appeared to get the following points from the movie.

1- fight people

2- break stuff

I think this movie goes over a lot of people's heads because it almost does too good a job of romanticizing the "fight club" part of the movie. This is not a movie about Fight Club nearly so much as it's a movie about Jack.

I totally admit thats what i thought of when i first saw the movie. Then i started thinking it was more about stopping being reliant on material needs. Now theres something to be learned about jack (actual name unknown? I never got that) and how we as a society have a lot of things going on beneath the surface. I think in order to form a beter opinion about the movie i will have to read not only the book but other books by the author as well.

Its so you, as a person, can relate to him better. The lack of a name on the protagonist is a good literary mechanic, and they transferred it to the movie.

I did, at least I think so.

What IMHO makes FC interesting is that it actually has some room for interpretion. I can understand that the anti-materialism/luxury-angst aspects is what caught people's attention and that they think FC said something really important about life because of that.

On it's own those ideas are rather dull though and probably not what the movie is about. I may be be wrong, but if I am, that means we were supposed to go "Yeah! Aaaamen!" when Tyler held his little speech about the generation without a cause - and I certainly didn't. There is something more to it.

To me, FC was mostly a story about the mechanics of fascism with some clever meta-film aspects: A charismatic guy tells it like it is (like making fun of underwear ads "Is this what we are supposed to look like?" Well, Mr Pitt, you actually do look exactly like a male underwear model. And while we're speaking of abs - everyfuckingone wants to have the cool Tyler Durden hair and the cool Tyler Durden leather jacket.), formulates some new age-ish ideas about capitalism and individualism and bored out of their minds white collars jumps the bandwagon to violence and mayhem.

So, basically FC is about how wanting to be unique and cool like Brad Pitt leads to shaving your head, dress in uniform and giving up your individuality for a (supposed to be) great cause.

Lot of interesting points, good to hear someone got something lasting out of it. I thought it definitly is a "feel good" movie (not in the traditional sense) basically in that it can make you get hyped up about breaking free and making changes in your life. There's a lot of different angles that could be interpreted in so many ways that I dont feel Im qualified to, definitly a work I enjoyed though. Personally I don't think it had a huge impact on my train of thought, but perhaps I was putting too much emphasis on that as I can't now think of a film that had a strong lasting effect on me, I think I'm better with books. For a movie though it definitly did the book justice, if not surpassed it in some ways.

This movie is only worth watching again once you realize that the Helena Bonham Carter character isn't really there either.

In his next movie, Panic Room, this is confirmed as the three robbers are clearly just id, ego, and superego.
