It's only going to get worse. This is especially true with China starting to thirst for oil.

I suggest you take a look at this website

http://smalley.rice.edu/

And watch the video titled "Columbia University - "Our Energy Challenge" in the center of the page. It is the only solution to our problem IMO. The solution could be paid for with a 5 cent gas tax.

On a related note, I also suggest you take a look at this:

http://www.iter.org/
Which is supposed to produced 500MW of fossil free power in it's experimental form.

However, it has been stuck in politics for the last 20 years and my contacts still don't think US politicians (and others) are serious about the project.

This is a website that has a historical record of deadline after deadline which has failed to of been met due to political gridlock.

http://fire.pppl.gov/

Energy is expensive and the people with the $$$ and power, private and political, don't care enough to act.

Correction, they love it. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/talking_point/4232445.stm)

What about biodiesel? That seems like it could be a good solution once they start producing enough of it. It's cool because it will work in the diesel engines being made today and it's made from soybeans.

I was going to say something about this. I watched a show today, Trucks! or some stupid thing on spike, where you can buy the contraption to make the biodisel out of vegetable oil, thats free from any fast food joint. It makes 50 or 100 gals for about 20$. No change needed to the engine either.

BioDiesel is a great technology but this is one area where the lobbyists/oil companies/foreign leaders, etc...are going to fight this change to the death. Just think, if we stop buying oil from the Kuwatis, they just might have to get educated and work like we do. They don't want that, and there are too many people just like them that don't want that.

Turning plants such as corn, soybeans and sunflowers into fuel uses much more energy than the resulting ethanol or biodiesel generates, according to a new Cornell University and University of California-Berkeley study.

Hydrogen (which most people are all over) isn't very golden either. There isn't enough platinum to go around.

There are solutions. Some are explained in smalleys video. Others are explained in many of my previous posts. But without funding, they will never come to fuition.

H2 fuel-cell stuff is just hopeless. IIRC, the total amount of platinum mined on this planet wouldn't fill my house.
