View Full Version : Unusual commission fee, ante ?

Hi,My first post, so be kind ...
My question involves the use of a "commission fee" at my local casino in Australia.
The casino only recently started offering 5/10 10/20 limit texas hold'em. The way the casino makes money is unusual, and lot different to Vegas (the only other place I've played). Instead of raking the pot, each player must pay a commission fee (75c on 5/10, $1 on 10/20) to play the round. It's kind of like an ante I suppose, but goes straight into the casino's pocket, not the pot. There's also the usual small blind/big blind bets which do count towards pot.
The effect of the "comission fee" before first two cards are dealt, is that a lot of players then pay to see the flop. They figure they've paid a small fee already, so they should pay a bit more and see the flop. The game is very loose and often passive, 8-9 players seeing the flop, little raising. The 10-20 game is only slightly tighter.
My question is how to adjust my starting hands?
With so many players playing bad cards I feel I should play more starting hands (connectors/suited etc) that like lots of opponents.
I've been playing fairly tight, but getting very little action at what is usually a table of very bad players, playing lots of bad starting hands, and following it up with very average post-flop play. The game is also very slow (slow hand per hour rate) as dealer is always changing chips so players can outlay their 75c or $1 commission bet.
I feel I need to get into more hands, and rely a bit on my post-flop play to increase my win per hour rate.
The starting hands I use now is that recommended in "Small Stakes Hold'em" by Miller, Sklansky, Malmuth, for a "Loose Game"... I'm all in favour of playing tight starting hands, but should I play looser starting hands given the casino's commission fee and the frequency of a large number of players seeing the flop ??
Thanks in advance for any advice ...
