is this a monthly thing or a special event? I didnt get an email about it, which is unusual for Empire.

I guess once you have enough VIP points you have an option to spend 2000 on this VIP freeroll... I busted 139th out of 204..
Its a decent payout though 1st place is $2700. It pays the top 30
