So here is the idea. We all know how downswings and variance can drive us crazy. There aren't a whole lot of positive mental aspects to playing poker. But I've thought of one.

From now on, I'm going to refer (Amoung family) to the last 12 months of poker income as my poker salary. Every month I make more than I did in the same month the previous year, I'm going to say I got a raise. If in year 1 you made 3K in August, and this year you make 7K, you recieved a 4K raise. Over the course of a year, most people move up limits/get significantly better so I expect nearly everyone on the boards is getting a raise nearly every month. If we wanted to, we could have a monthly, "I got a raise" thread in which everyone brags but that could get ugly. Anyway I like thinking about poker in the terms. It makes me happy. After all, poker is one of the few occupations where you can get merit based pay increases every month.

Krishan

P.S. I'm not really going to go around shouting about money to my family. This is just a personal way to make things look positive.

Alright guys, what game were you playing 1 year ago? I was playing 2/4 so even with a very shitty month. .3 BB/100 I'm still making more than I did a year ago.

Damn i like the idea of this, i got a raise of like 17k this month from last year. Amazing how much more there is to be made at 20-40 than $10 SNG's.

On a serious note Krishan, i think it's good to take a line where you look at things positively. Obviously when you make the transition to being a full time player, some stetches will invariably being testing and frustrating. However, when you run well for a month and make 6 months salary at your old job, you won't be thinking about that.

Having had a little experience with family members being initially resistant to poker, I can tell you that time helps. When you show them you can be sucessful over an extended period of time, they will be happy for you. As i'm sure you know, any resistance on their part is just out of concern and love, but when you tell them you're getting a raise every month they'll be more assured. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

this made me look and I realized that I only played 8k hands thus far...whoooooops. taking 2 weeks off is part of the reason...but damn.

I was playing $10 SNG's after flushing away 2/3rd's of my bankroll playing $100NL and higher SNG's. That was definitly the experience that made me conservative with bankroll management, so i guess it's paid itself off several times over. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

yeah I am with JBB here, losing months are still possible. So since I finished WAY in the red last month that makes it the biggest anti-raise in history. I also fail to see the point of comparing. These comparisons should be done within the same stakes, saying I made money playing 15/30 than I did 2/4 is stating the obvious.

It's not done for any useful analytical reason. It's just a feel good boost.

That the 450 BB downswing I had this month was just variance. Actually mentally I'm in really good shape. This is one thing that helps keep me in good shape.

didnt know u experienced a 450 doozy. that is EXACTLY what I had last month in the 10/20. made me wanna shoot myself.

However I did not chalk it up variance this time, I changed some things around and after playing 4 tables for 9 months, have cut down to 2.

Actually most of the 450 drop was at 5/10. So I'm still feeling pretty good. I got some coaching and am working on a couple things on my game but am basically feeling pretty good.

Yeah, cutting down from 8-6 tables to 6-4 is really helping. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

GGbman and Allin. Both very worthwhile IMO. They are both coaches who can explain why a particular move is correct. that's the defining characteristic of a good coach.
