Basically, each quarter represents 1/4 of your total gambling tax liability from the year before. So say you paid 10,000 in taxes on poker last year. Each quarterly payment is 2500 (I'm approximating here and not inc. state taxes, etc). If you win a lot more (or less), you can make adjustments to the amt you pay per quarter.

Good question, I'm not sure. Business have to file quarterly, I think they are just arbitrary dates that were decided on for this purpose.

Since April 15th is yearly tax due date, I'm going to guess:

Jan-Feb-Mar: June 15th
Apr-May-Jun: Sept 15th
Jul-Aug-Sep: Jan 17th
Oct-Nov-Dec: Apr 15th

Ya, it sucks. That two month one can be rough if you owe a lot and don't plan for it ahead of time.

My dates for payment were all strange last year too, but this year they are every three months - April 15, July, Oct., and then Jan. 15 2006 -

Yes, I was actually a week later filing. I thought I was going to be 3 weeks early, and was shocked when I found that the payment was due in June and not July.

If you make your payments on those dates, your second and third payments will be a month late. The due dates for estimated tax payments have not changed for 2005. You can check the IRS website instructions for Form 1040-ES to see for yourself. The due dates are on the middle of page 2 in the far right column.
