After years of buying albums, I already know the answer to this. Which track is most often the best?

It's usually either 2 or 5. 3 or 6 if there's an intro track.

i've noticed that 7 and 8 generally seem to be good tracks.

Oh, and Patrick is right, if they do a lame-assed intro for song 1, then it's 3.

Track 6 on a 10-track album. Usually the first tune, second side is the good one.
