Hi there,
Is there anyway to know if I buy a cheap computer (like one of these Dell 3000's) (http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/outrageous_desktops?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd&DGSite=q IqiQw3qlhhRAkm8tWpq0038386869) that I will be able to upgrade it?

for instance, with RAM and a DVD burner, which I already own. will there be expansion room?

DVD burner upgrade will be no problem. Most of those DEll's will have two slots for RAM but that does not necessarily mean the RAM you have is compatible with the unit you purchase. RAM is so inexpensive that you should customize it when ordering.
