View Full Version : $100 for a monitor for non-overlap 4 tabling

08-25-2005, 07:37 AM
I have about $100 to spend on a monitor and I would like to be able to 4 table without overlap. I have heard that there are CRT monitors with 1200x1600 resolution for a reasonable price. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thats goign to be tough, mainly because shipping on such a beast will be about... $100.

Find a local used computer or computer parts store. Not Compusa but a little hole in the wall place that fixes computers and sells parts or used computers They will have about 100 monitors lying around for under $100. You will have to do some research after you review their selection but you will probably find what you are looking for.

IMHO however, you should not be too concerned about a little overlap. I recently got a second 19" LCD monitor and it has a little overlap but is still a huge improvement over a single monitor. THere is an FAQ in the Zoo which liks a multi monitor FAQ which has pics about overlap. Save yourself the $ and live with some overlap

I tried that, and had no luck finding any bargain prices for a decent monitor. I soon found I could get a better deal buying new.

I have 2 1600x1200 CRTs that are great. One is a refurbished Dell 21" I bought from Overstock.com for about $250 (they charge under $3 an order for shipping anything, even a huge CRT). The other is a Samsung 19" brand new from Best Buy for $179. You will sometimes find a 19" 1600x1200 on sale at some place like Office Depot for much less, but the refresh rate is so slow it will fry your eyeballs. You get what you pay for.

I have an old school sony G400 19in CRT. I have had it for nearly 5 years. It can do 4 tables in 1600x1200 on my current video card.

Newegg has a couple of monitors for less than $100 that do 1600*1200. But the refreshrate and quality will be very bad I promise. Save some more and buy a better one. I always get an over average monitor when I buy one and I never regret it. I rather have a little slower cpu and less memory but a realy good monitor it makes such a difference.

I got a used compaq 9500 on ebay for about $80 shipped and its been perfect for what i needed it for, which was to 4 table w/ no overlap

Thanks for all the input guys. What kind of refresh rate should I be looking for?

ATLEAST 75hz in 1600*1200, 85 (or more, but just a bonus) is preferable. For CRT that is. 60hz is the "norm" on a TFT, and is comparable to 85 on a CRT.

If you are gonna save some money for a TFT instead I recomend the one I have, this (http://graphics.tomshardware.com/display/20041123/17_lcd-17.html). And am very happy about it, zero pixels broken on mine. Won't let you quadtable but if you are looking for a 1280*1024 TFT I would recomend it. It has high contrast and low latency and pivot. I run it at 70hz. I have the T model (buy no other). If you decide to save up for a 1600*1200, the Dell 2001fp is the good budget alternative (with rebates), and Samsung 213T the real stuff.

I can't vouch for the company, but this link was posted here a while back. There are others out there like it at similar prices.

I was going to buy one, but decided to go for the 2001FP instead. It only takes a few bonuses to pay for it.

I would pay the extra $24 and get http://www.accurateit.com/details.asp?iid=496# instead, also includes shipping in the price and is not grade b. Good price for a referbished monitor with that specs. Trinitron tubes are by far the best. Take a look at that one jmiller if you are intrested in a refurbished one.

that one looks great...thanks a bunch mymindisgoing!

Upgrade your graphics drivers and directx and install the correct monitor driver when you get the monitor. The quality should be superb! If I wanted a cheap monitor I would by it myself /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I just got the monitor today and its really sweet. However on the 1600x1200 setting the colors and graphics are bad, obviously I need to upgrade some things. Mymindisgoing, how do I go about doing this? (see below quote)

"Upgrade your graphics drivers and directx and install the correct monitor driver when you get the monitor."

Can anyone point me in the right direction? As you can see I am no computer expert, so help a guy out! Thanks.

Bestbuy has their store brand for 130 or so.

19", 1200x1600 85hz

The driver is here: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&releaseid=R180 10&formatcnt=1&fileid=17526

Download and run and follow instructions (if there are any).

To find the graphics drivers you got to say what card you got.

I have XP, but what you linked me to says its is for Windows Millenium. Does that make a difference?

MyMindIsGoing

I think it should work fine (you will know otherwise), XP was not out when the driver came.

09-01-2005, 12:11 AM
Anybody? How do I get this darn thing to go 1600x1200 with no color or graphics issues?!!?!?!?

Well, I found the driver and installed it, but had problems installing the directx correctly...I kept getting errors. A thing that I have noticed now after updating the drivers is taht I no longer can set the resolution for 1600x1200. I could do this before, but with poor colors and graphics (likely because it was running in 256 color mode).

What graphics card you got? What does Direct X complain about? Since the monitor can run at 1600*1200, the monitor driver was not good, uninstall it.
