AIM's software IS evil. If you're just going to use aim I would recommend getting the windows client for gaim and using that instead. You could also check out trillian too. Honestly, just about anything is better than using AOL's terrible AIM software. Trillian also lets you talk to all IM services (AIM/MSN/Yahoo/etc) and I think gaim does as well.

I second trillian, a bit more difficult to setup (more settings), but if you feel you can handle it at all its very much worth it. Especially if you use mutliple chat clietns (AIM, ICQ, MSN).

I used trillian a while ago, maybe a year or two, and it was buggy for me. Maybe it is better now. I didn't know google does this. I would be surprised if their app wasn't the best, but everyone seems to be on AIM, so if it doesn't reach those people...well it will probably only take google a year or two to get everyone.
