What about this? Should I just call preflop and then lead the flop? Once he moves in I only beat AK, which seems unlikely.

you played it perfectly. he has AA/KK or JJ 90% of the time. good fold.

Good fold IMO - unless you have a read on your opponent. Typical hand range is JJ-AA (I could see AA flat calling after the sandwiched guy folded) or AK - and like you said, you only beat AK here (seems like an odd move for AK to pull this). 99 or 55 are also remote possibilities which beat you.

Comes down to read, but assuming you have none, I fold this.

if AK wanted to represent AA, wouldn't it do so preflop?

I don't know that I can make this laydown getting 3:1.

I call and expect to lose.

I also bet more on the flop, so that I'm getting even better odds, and slightly more fold equity.

I expect to see AK or a PP < JJ at least 25% of the time here.
