I drink these carbonated 100% fruit juice drinks called izzes. I opened a bottle, drank half of it and left it out with the cap loosely on about a month ago. Today I go to throw it out. It reeks of alcohol. I want to taste it but am very afraid. What's the possibility of me getting sick/hurt by drinking it?

if you boil it first your chances of getting sick go waaaaay down.

This is wise.

Go ahead and drink some - provide trip report.

You also boil off the alcohol.

So you're saying I should boil it, then get drunk off it?

Just add some Hydrochloric Acid first to kill the germs, then drink it.

Is this true? DON'T boil it then. Just drink it and keep a phone nearby (for 911 - but first provide trip report).

Is there a safer way to make more of these in the future?

A little bacteria never hurt anybody. Give it a drink. It's probably going to taste bad. If you start to get stomach cramps or get the shits real bad, fess up a tell a doctor what you did, and ask for antibiotics.

Have a stomach pump and some laxatives ready.

I had the same thing happen with a old bottle of apple juice that was knocked behind a box for a couple months. It had a nasty white fuzzy moldy layer on top, but it actually smelled pretty good.

when a friend of mine was a trustee in jail he made orange peel moonshine in the trustee locker. He said it just made him feel sick.

I have taken a sip. It burned on the way down but didn't taste too bad. I hope I don't throw up now.

If I freeze it, will that kill some bacteria?

Is there anyway to recreate this with less bacteria? If I just open it and close it immediately afterwards?

SmileyEH

Yes, but you should probably add yeast or something to help the fermenting process.

I just had my first Izze this morning. Pomengrate flavor. Was pretty good.

Pear used to be the best but they changed the flavor recently and now it sucks. Clementine is easily the best with pomegranate in second.

Great stuff. How does it look? Normal? Or does the bottle attack?

It looks slightly more clear than the regular juice. No visible mold.

Microwave might kill bacteria and viruses without getting it hot enough to steam off the alcohol. Or beachwood age it, something like that.

Would dumping some PGA in there kill off the bacteria? Patrick?

That is true, but if you boil it you will also probably boil off most of the alcohol. Even if it doesn't make you sick, it will most likely taste really bad. You obviously got some wild yeast into it, but there's a good chance that some mold or bacteria also got into it, which will either taste bad or make you sick.

If you really want to go into home brewing or winemaking, you need boil the stuff or pasterize it, add yeast, and put a trap on it to keep bacteria and mold out. If you got something decent tasting with your accidental wild yeat fermentation, you could innoculate your next batch with the current batch (assuming you didn't already drink all of it, but you need some kind of trap (to let gas out, but not let bacterial or mold spores in) to keep your next batch from getting contaminated with something nasty.

I'm guessing could also treat it effectively with Iodine tabs or Chlorine. It works in the backcountry (http://www.outdoors.org/activities/hiking/hiking-water-treatment.cfm).

Kurosh, anyone who thinks they can clean up poison is a fool.

Make hooch, and make it the right way.

You could filter-sterilize it to get rid of the bacteria/yeast/etc while keeping the alcohol. Or, if you have access to a chem lab, you could distill off the alcohol and drink only that.
