I’m staying at the new Crowne Plaza Hotel at the Commerce Casino. It’s nice, but it should be since it’s brand new. If you have stayed in other Crowne Plaza’s, the room is the same as most. This one has a mini-bar and microwave. I asked them to put in a refrigerator and they did. All the rooms have safe’s, too.
The poker rate is $79 per night, which is considerably lower than the standard rates. I checked expedia and the Crowne site using my priority club number and the best I could find was $89 on the weekend and $159 during the week. If you play in the top section, there is no requirement on playing hours. You just tell the floorman that you want the poker rate, and he walks over close to the hotel desk and yells, “hey, make sure this guy gets the poker rate!”
The hotel is on the smaller side for Crowne’s, only 9 floors. It has a small workout room and an outdoor pool and spa, which are closed right now. The top section (15-30 and above) has been moved to the lower level of the hotel. That means if you play 9-18, you get to sit up in the old terrace in the original room. The new room doesn’t have a terrace, but I think it’s only a matter of time before they build one so the high limit players can look down on the peons below.
I think the new poker room is a great improvement over the old one. It is much roomier, and of course, all the tables and chairs are brand new. It isn’t nearly as noisy, so it is possible to talk to players at the other end of the table without shouting at the top of your lungs. I haven’t noticed people bumping into the back of my chair, and the floor people, board people, and food servers seem to be doing a good job. The only thing I don’t like is that it takes a very long time to get chips. They should do it like HP, where the runners carry the chips with them and sell them to you right at the table.
The action is great. Lot’s of HP players have defected, making the games similar to those at HP. Games above 40-80 have been spotty the last couple of days, but I’m sure they’ll pick up after the holidays. Today, there was an 80 stud and a 60 mix, and for a short while, a 60 holdem, which leads to my good beat story:
I played 40 all afternoon, and booked a respectable win. I decided to take a break, and after sitting in my room for a couple of hours, it was time for dinner. Nothing on the in-room dining menu looked too good, so I decided to go down, put my name on a list, and have a free meal. As I was ordering, several players were sitting down at what is usually the 80 holdem table, but when I went to check it out, they were starting a 60 holdem game because some of the players weren’t comfortable playing 80.
This seemed like a good place to have dinner, especially since 3 of my favorite players were sitting in the game. To make a short story short, while eating dinner I won over $3800. By the time I finished, 2 of my favorites had quit, and the third was almost broke, so I racked up and quit, too. The remaining players weren’t real happy with me, but I didn’t feel any responsibility to help them keep the game going. F*** em if they can’t take a joke.
I’ve seen several local players that I know, and today I ran into Toothpick Doug from LV. I saw Boris Bearcat’s post yesterday and looked for him but wasn’t able to find any bald young guys wearing green jeans. Besides, you wouldn’t believe the looks you get from players when you are looking under the table to see what color their jeans are.
I don’t know what Andy Fox looks like either. I’ve been looking for a bald, 50ish Jewish guy who dresses like a cowboy and has a New York accent. I figure it’s only a matter of time before I spot him. Until then, I’ll be waiting for Rick to come over and buy me that drink.
