View Full Version : what anti-virus software to use?

08-21-2005, 08:48 AM
so my free trial period for mcafee is up and im wondering is it worth buying it for the next year or is there any better (or equal?) software available for free?

its not that i mind paying the fee but if i can get something the exact same for nothing, whats the point in paying for it?

im not that great of a technical mind when it comes to virus protection and would like something that will do the work for me so if it finds a virus, it automatically deletes it and i dont have to do much except maybe run the scan......

any advice appreciated

I use Avast which is free software, and I like it.

I switched from Norton's to Avast last year and would never go back. Not only is Avast free to home users but I think it works better and also auto-updates its virus database.

McAfee is the nuts. I've tried all of the freebies (Avast, Zone Alarm, etc.) and everything else, and I've never been happier with McAfee. It's easy to use, unobtrusive, reliable, and not that expensive for the peace of mind.

Screw all that free crap--it ain't worth it.

I really like NOD32 (http://www.nod32.com/home/home.htm).

Nice.

I mentioned www.twoplustwo.com (http://www.twoplustwo.com) as the reference when registering the Home product. Can't hurt the advertising prospects here.

I recently talked to tech support at my ISP (a small and user-friendly operation), and they said Avast is the best there is.

I like NOD32 as well, but when I get my new computer I'll probably try Avast. I like the idea of using freeware as much as possible. I gave up Norton/McAfee long ago. With my computer of modest resources it was a resource hog. I then found it to be unbelievably difficult to completely uninstall. It left files all over the place which were not deleted in the standard uninstall process. Had to use a registery cleaner to get rid of all of them. Just recently I had to unistall and reinstall NOD32 and it uninstalled cleanly and completely in one shot.

McAffe came with my PC with a free trial, and I've paid to extend it. My only complaint (minor) is that it makes you log in as an administrator to install the updates.
