Poker Variant Site Update

As some of you may know, I used to have a pdf on my website with a list of poker variants. I got rid of the pdf, put all the games into a relational database, and generated a web page for each game. They can all be found here (http://www.xenomind.com/pokervar/index.html). There is nothing there now that wasn't in the pdf. However, I have about 500 games that aren't in the database, and now that everything is automated, I plan to add a few to the database each week , and update the web page accordingly.

Very interesting, an impressive collection. "triple draw lowball" should come in (at least) two varieties, A-5 and 2-7. I can't find single-draw lowball either, which comes in three common varieties (A-5, 2-7, and A-5 with a joker).

Wow! Nicely done. I haven't worked my way through all of it, but I like what I've seen, especially the "Summation by Types" and "Stats by Type" indexes. Beautiful.

Oh, and if you do single-draw lowball, be sure to mention California rules lowball (i.e. maditory betting on sevens and no check-raising).

I'd add five-card Omaha to the Omaha variant page; I believe 5CO is more popular than 6CO.

Ah, I'd meant to put a section in the introduction about lowball hands. I'm not intending to put different low hand variants of the same game in the database unless they have specific names, like Razz for seven stud lowball with casino lows. Single draw lowball is in the list of games that I need to enter into the database.

When single draw lowball is played with a joker, is the joker generally fully wild or just a bug?

It's in the file of stuff to add, under the name Ped. When I made the original pdf, the hold'em craze hadn't quite caught on yet. So there are a lot of hold'em variants that are in the list to add, but aren't in the data base yet.

The joker takes the value of the lowest card not present in your hand. So it's not fully wild in that you can't deliberately pair or make a worse hand. (That might matter if you were playing with the sevens rule, I guess--- suppose you know a later position player has a better hand; you want to check/fold after the draw, but if your joker gives you a 7 you must bet. If it gave you an 8 you could check.)

A-5 and 2-7 triple draw are substantially different games, despite similar rulesets. It may not seem like the different hand rankings are a huge change, but they really are.

A small note: in the listing for "Canadian 5 card stud" aka Soko, you accidentally list a 4 straight as beating a four flush, rather than the opposite. If you're interested there's a great passage in the William Kennedy novel "Billy Phelan's Greatest Game" that describes a Canadian Poker game in the early 20th century, tho' in that book they play it w/out a common upcard.
