View Full Version : Soundproofing an apartment bedroom?

08-19-2005, 11:10 PM
Here's the situation guys:

I'm living in an apartment with 3 people and my room is directly parallel to another bedroom. Us two guys have separate doors to our rooms but theres bars coming about 1 feet down from the ceiling before the actual wall starts. We share a wall in other words but theres about 1-2 feet of open space up there. There is nothing in between the bars so I can hear what's going on in the other room and vice versa.

Can you give me some serious suggestions for soundproofing the room? Like what could I stick up there between the bars(which are about 6 inches apart and there are about 10 of them) to keep at least some of the sound out? Thanks.

It depends, do you want to keep sound in or sound out? /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Seriously though just get some cork from a old peg board and your good to go.

If your bedroom walls are made of cork, are the activities which you soundproof your room in order to keep others from hearing actually going to end up taking place?

Recording studio foam is sick but its pretty spendy for the good stuff. Google it online or head down to your local Guitar center or high endish music store.

The cheap alternative used by many is eggcrates positioned with the "egg" side inwards towards the room. I dont know what your budget is, but if it isnt big, find something to cram in the gap (old sheets or something), then secure a board with eggcrates on it on each side of the wall. Wont look too good, but probably get the job done.

Recording studio foam is dope, and will look much nicer, but it is pretty spendy most of the time.
